Facebook Application For Symbian Touch

facebook-logoNokia has just released a Facebook application that will run on the Symbian touch operating system, aka S60V5, which the Nokia 5800, the soon-to-be-released N97, and the Samsung i8910 HD/Omnia HD uses.  It’s apparently a fairly comprehensive application, so Facebook users using these phones should be happy.  You can either download it off the Ovi Store using a web browser by clicking here, or just firing up your Ovi Store application on your phone to search for, and download and install it.

Do drop a comment if you would like to share you experience in using it.  I don’t use Facebook, so I won’t be able to share with you my daily dose of wisdom rubbish.

Adobe Flash Lite Update Available For Nokia 5800

adobe-logoThe Nokiaguide website reports that an update to the Adobe Flash Lite player is now available for the Nokia 5800.  Previously, updates to Flash was embedded within the operating system or firmware update, but now it is being pushed out separately.  According to the Adobe Flash Lite website, the changelog for version 3.1 includes:

  • Improved Web Browsing, 91% of top 500 internet sites.
  • Flash 9 (AS2 only) support.
  • Local Connection / HTML Text / GetURL_target / CSS support / WMode.
  • H.264 support / Improved video support (smoothing, seek).
  • Improved memory handling for images.
  • MP3 Streaming support.
  • Support for hardware acceleration — Flash Lite 3.1 supports OpenVG 1.1 to improve flash rendering performance on capable devices.
  • Linux Reference port.

Most of the items above sound Greek to me, so even if they were lying (which of course they’re not!) we wouldn’t know the difference.  Anyway, a new version is always better, so I went ahead and upgraded.  The update apparently results in smoother and faster rendering of Flash video, which is always useful if you watch YouTube videos a lot.  To check whether you can update or not, tap “Applications” – “App. update”.

Firmware v21.0.025 For Nokia 5800 Now Available On Nokia Software Updater

nokia-logo-1This may be old news to some, but for those who had given up on waiting for firmware v21.0.025 to appear on the Nokia Software Updater (NSU), it looks like it’s finally here!  And judging by the list below, it would appear that most, if not all, country codes are now supported.  So, go ahead and update yours now.  Remember, updating via NSU doesn’t preserve your data and applications, so make sure you back them up before upgrading, otherwise you’ll end up having to hunt down the applications again, as well as banging your head against the concrete wall for losing all that  personal data!

Nimbuzz For The Nokia 5800 Available Now

I initially wrote about this here, and today, it’s officially available for download from Nimbuzz’s website.  Nimbuzz is a multi protocol instant messaging application and VoIP application, much like fring.  And according to the feedback in my original post, it appears that nimbuzz performs better than fring when using VoIP for communications, such as Skype.

Here’s some features unique to the 5800:

  • Landscape chat – so you can make use of the wide keyboard.
  • Shortcut buttons so you can easily update your profile, status, or personal message
  • No need for the stylus – Nimbuzz can be operated entirely with your fingers.
  • Personal messages are fully displayed in the contact list for all communities.
  • Chat with friends from 14 different Instant Messaging communities and Social Networks (Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, MySpace, Yahoo, Google Talk).
  • Call your buddies from Nimbuzz, Skype or  Gtalk using your mobile data plan or WiFi connection.
  • Cheap phone calls at low rates with SkypeOut or using one of our SIP partners.

Firmware V21.0.025 FOTA Update Available For Nokia 5800 Malaysian Product Code

nokia-xpressmusic-5800A good friend, Kumar, informed me that firmware version 21.0.025 is now available for upgrading via FOTA (firmware over the air) for the Nokia 5800 for the official Malaysia sets with product codes 0570196 (red) and 0570197 (blue).  The firmware uprade file via FOTA is around 3.6Mb in size, so it’s really small and easy to download.  FOTA has always been my preferred approach for firmware upgrades, for one major reason – UDP, aka “User Data Preservation”, which basically means that you don’t have to backup anything (well, I like to live life a little dangerously!) as the upgrade will preserve all applications, settings and data.  If you use the Nokia Software Updater or NSU, you are “forced” to download the entire firmware image, amounting to well over 130+Mb, and I suspect the upgrading process will take a longer time compared to FOTA.

For the record, here is my experience with the firmware upgrade:

  1. UDP worked – all my data and programs were preserved.
  2. I had to restart the phone manually.  After the FOTA upgrade, the phone just shut down.
  3. I had to enter the date and time when the phone restarted.
  4. sadly, installserver stopped working, which means no more installing unsigned or expired applications for me, boo hoo hoo…I will investigate this matter further.

If there are any other interesting observations, I will post them later.  Meantime, chime in with your comments on how this firmware upgrade has improved your life!  Did it improve the camera?
