10 Tips For New HTC HD2 Users

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The pocketables website has a useful article on how a new user to the HTC HD2 can maximise the use of his/her new toy, without having to resort to installing custom firmwares or operating systems from the xda-developers website, which is the premier website to go to for all things HTC (basically “hacking” (in a good way) your device to make it even more useful).  I guess this is a useful way to break you into HTC devices easily, before attempting the more advanced stuff that is in the xda-developers website.  And trust me when I say this – installing custom firmwares or operating systems from that website does make the device more “usable”, for want of a better word.

Toshiba TG01 In Malaysia

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Yes, I’m a bit late in reporting this, but I first saw this device on my weekly visit to Lowyat Plaza last week, so I thought it must have been “new”.  Granted, this superphone from Toshiba has been out in some European countries like for a few years already, but it’s only recently made it to our shores.  Must be some left over unsold stock from the developed countries.  It’s selling for a recommended retail price of RM 2,499.  If you’re interested, you can find it in your favourite PDA/smartphone retailer in Lowyat Plaza, a random walk on the ground floor should throw up some shops.

Apparently, according to this Toshiba newsflash page, it only went on sale in Malaysia just after Christmas, on the 27th of December 2009.  Why is it a superphone?  Well, because it’s got a huge-ish screen at 4.1 inches (still smaller than the HTC HD2 which clocks in at 4.3 inches, though) and comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor of 1GHz, the same that powers the HTC HD2 and the Google Nexus One.  Click here for its specifications.  It comes pre-installed with Windows Mobile 6.5.

SonyEricsson Xperia X2 Available In Malaysia

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Random surfing on a quiet and boring Saturday evening brought me to Sony Style Malaysia’s website, and surprisingly, I found the Xperia X2, the successor to the not-very-successful Xperia X1 (and I’m putting this politely!) on sale.  I don’t think this news is going to set the mobile world alight, after all, an Xperia is an Xperia.  The “X” most likely stands for “xpensive” or “x-rated” price.  So, how much for the X2?  A princely RM 2,799.  Crazy expensive, but not surprising.  At least you get some miserable free gifts – “FREE – Clip-on Bluetooth Handsfree VH300 + 4GB MicroSD.

Click here if you’re interested.  My advice?  Pay a couple of RM more, and get the HTC HD2 running the same Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system.  Hardware wise, heads and shoulders above the X2.  Bigger screen, faster processor.  Bigger RAM.  HTC Sense.  You get the idea.

And no, I wasn’t invited to the launch.  PR companies in Malaysia don’t like people who always write negative things about their clients.  It’s easier to handle fanboys.  Which reminds me, I need to find a link to a SonyEricsson fanboy site for Malaysia for you guys…

SD Card Update For HTC HD2

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Ah, the updates for HTC’s new HD2 super-phone is coming on fast.  We’ve had updates for the camera, and SMS, and now the third update addresses the SD card storage feature.  The notes accompanying the update are cryptic, to say the least, and having read it twice, I am still unsure whether it allows the SD card slot to now recognise higher/bigger capacity SD cards, or whether this introduces a new compression algorithm so that more pictures can now be stored on an SD card of the same capacity!

Download the update here, and apparently you only need to update if your camera’s software is version 6.26 (Build 1921.1625) or lower.  You can access the version screen by pressing “HOME > Start Menu > Camera> Settings > Advanced > Page 5> About> Version information“.

If you have noticed that the performance of the camera/SD card is better after this update, write back to let us know!

HTC HD2 Camera Fix Now Available

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

htc new logoThanks to “nero” in the shoutbox, we now know that a new fix/update for the newly released HD2 is available which supposedly fixes the pink tinge/hue that one sees smack in the centre of a picture when taking a picture of a completely white surface.  The fix doesn’t refer to rectifying this problem (they almost always never do!), but is instead titled “Update for HTC HD2 – Digital Picture Enhancement” with the following details:

This update for HTC HD2 delivers clear digital picture quality like never before. Living up to the name of “HD” this phone and its twin LED flash will take beautiful pictures for you to cherish your memories. Displayed in brilliant vibrant colors on its 4.3 inch screen, HTC HD2 camera will delight you.

So, download it here, apply it and share with us the results, will you?  According to nero, it does fix the pink tinge issue, as well as the colour balance being more “natural and real”.  Kudos to HTC for bringing this much needed update so quickly – this one strikes off one of my few annoyances with the HD2, and makes the phone much more desirable; if only I had the money to purchase it!  I can’t test this update, because, sadly, my review unit has been returned.

Thanks, nero!
