The Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t Unboxed

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Are you one to get off on unboxing videos?  Looking for a tablet?  Your prayers are answered then!  Here’s an unboxing video from the netbooknews website where the reviewer rambles on for quite a bit, fondling and caressing almost every inch of the device.  I don’t like the battery design – although I know it’s a high capacity battery of 6-8 cells, it really adds to the length of the device, adding almost 2 inches, by my rough estimate.  I would prefer one that is bulky at the bottom, raising the netbook a little, for better airflow.

The S10-3t is a tablet of course – that’s what that “t” in the model number refers to – and it’s amongst the first 10 inch touchscreen tablets from a major manufacturer.  It supports multitouch and comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, at least for the version sold in Germany – but the one on sale here only comes with Windows 7 Starter, which, plainly, sucks.  The other thing I didn’t quite fancy was the white colour keyboard, and the fact that it is not a “chiclet” or “isolated” or “island” design.  That white colour will quickly turn beige-ish, then yellow-ish, then brown-ish and then morph into some colour yet named.  But that’s just me; some people do get off on white.

’tis A Season For Tablets And Slates

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

No one in their right minds was going to leave Apple to have the tablet/slate party all to themselves, so many have decided to just jump in to this segment; whether there are customers out there or not in sufficient numbers to justify investing in the market, no one really knows.  Following in Lenovo’s footsteps which announced the U1 Hybrid, HP has announced their Slate.  Yep – just the slate.  Nothing earth shattering about the name.  Boy, HP must be short in marketing budget this year to come up with such an unimaginative name!

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, revealed it during his CES (Consumer Electronics Show) keynote speech.  Very little details are available apart from what you see in the video below.  It is presumably a 10″ capacitive touchscreen device and runs Windows 7, but beyond this, no one knows what’s inside.  And HP is not telling yet.  Are you overwhelmed that people are beginning to pay attention to the slate form factor, or underwhelmed by the whole thing?

Turn Your Windows 7 Computer Into A Hotspot Provider

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

One of the new features of Windows 7 is that it makes it a whole lot easier to share an internet connection using the WiFi radio on your netbook/notebook.  For example, if you have an internet connection via a wired connection using the LAN port of your netbook/notebook, you can share this wired connection with other computers using the WiFi radio on the netbook/notebook.  This process has now been made a lot simpler by a piece of software called “Connectify” – the software, previously in beta, has now been unleashed onto the world.  And it’s free.  And what can be better than free software, apart from love, fresh air and sunshine?

So, for the more technically minded, Connectify is a software router of sorts, making use of your .  Download it here.  Note that, as the title of this post says – you need to be running Windows 7.  Obviously, due to the sheer number of wireless cards out there, not every card is supported – click here to see which ones are.  If you can’t make heads nor tails out of that page, just install it, run it, and see if it works.  If not, just uninstall it – this may be faster than trying to figure out what sort of chipset is in your computer’s wireless card!

Just How Successful Was The Windows 7 Launch?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

windows 7 yellow logoIf you’ve been reading this blog as well as listen to the ITChannel podcast that I am a part of, you’ll know that I’ve been consistently hammering Microsoft Malaysia regarding the Windows 7 launch – there’s no official price list to be found anywhere on the Microsoft Malaysia website, as well as the low key publicity surrounding the launch.  First off, we had the launch event later than the rest of the world.  While other people have moved on with their lives, we were only just beginning to get introduced the Microsoft’s latest and (some say) greatest operating system.  And the launch events/roadshows – what event?  What roadshow?  Just check out these two pictures I took of the event in the Curve shopping centre last week, the second venue in the string of roadshow events around Malaysia.

Wow!  Huge, crazy crowd there eh?  This was taken at around midday last Sunday at the Curve.  If my bonus was measured on the basis of the success of the event, I am quite certain that Microsoft’s event organiser or PR representative would have lost his/her/their entire bonus for this year!  :P
