Thanks also to JC for sharing this with us in the shoutbox! So, does this hint at cheaper prices of HTC phones to come? You tell me – my lips are sealed for the moment, and will be unsealed soon enough. At these prices, you don’t even have to consider the competition – it would be almost silly not to buy an HTC phone! Can we dream of the HTC Legend below RM 2,000? The HTC Smart below RM 1,000? The HTC HD Mini at around RM 1,800? My lips are sealed – waterboard me all you want, I’m not saying anything! What about the HTC Desire? Cheaper than the Google Nexus One in Singapore after conversion into RM? Torture me, torture me!

HTC Touch2 Launch Offer: The (Happy) Conclusion?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

windows mobile logohtc-logoIf you’ve been following the saga of the HTC Touch2 launching offer, organised by Microsoft in conjunction with the Windows Mobile 6.5 launch, which I covered rather extensively in this blog, the last post on which was here, I am now happy to report that based on the feedback from one my most regular and loyal readers (and friend whom I have yet to meet!) there appears to be a happy conclusion to this whole saga.

But before you jump up and down on your sofa like Mr Cruise did on Oprah’s show, this happy conclusion is only if you actually bothered to complete the “form” which the Microsoft representative handed out during the last day of the offer.  If not, sorry, they won’t have your particulars so they can’t contact you, and it’s too late now.  So, the story is that a Microsoft representative will be calling those who completed the forms, and these lucky people will be able to purchase the HTC Touch2 at the same launch price of RM 560.  No, your eyes are not deceiving you – it’s RM 560.  You have to make an appointment to go to Mont Kiara to “redeem” this super-duper special once-in-two-lifetimes offer.  And since they now have your name, there is no more need to do hand-to-hand combat with untrained, uneducated security guards employed by cheapskate shopping complexes security personnel nor other interested buyers.  Make your way there calmly, serenely, whistling the most happy tune you’ve heard of, safe in the knowledge that you have just saved yourself RM 1,000 in being persistent for standing up for your rights.

So, there you go.  This is not a fairytale, but the ending sounds like one, no?  Where the hero rides off into the sunset atop his stallion with two the most beautiful, expressive and articulate woman in the world?  Yikes, I better stop here, imagination is getting the better of me…

HTC Touch2 Offer – The Aftermath

Monday, October 12th, 2009

windows mobile logohtc-logoIf you’ve been following the saga that was the HTC Touch2 launch offer, in conjunction with the Windows Mobile 6.5 launching in Malaysia, this is an attempt to wrap up the story, as it unfolded for now.  I’ll try to keep this short and simple, as I am aware that there are some readers out there whose emotions are running a bit high due to rather chaotic nature that the event unfolded over the last two days.

Here’s what I’ve been able to gather so far based on my discussions with the “people in the know”:

  1. the event held at Sunway Pyramid was to celebrate the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 in Malaysia.  The focus of the event was not the offer from HTC.
  2. because HTC is the first in Malaysia to offer a device with Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft and HTC decided to do a joint promotion, which was the 65 units of the HTC Touch2 for 65% off for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (9th – 11th October).  The cost of the device subsidy was borne by Microsoft.
  3. the promotional offer was handled by a reseller, not HTC themselves.  HTC apparently did not have much of a say in how things unfolded.
  4. on Sunday, due to the very chaotic nature of the crowd, some people lost their tempers and a Microsoft representative had something thrown at him/her from the crowd due to the dissatisfaction.
  5. all parties involved completely misjudged the response to the offer, and were ill equipped to handle the large and huge crowds seen on Saturday, and Sunday.  When I went on Friday, the scene was nowhere near chaotic at all; in fact, the queue looked orderly, and the entire queue moved when told to, in order not to disrupt the business of other outlets in the blue atrium area, where the launch event was held.

Personally, I was quite surprised at the hits that this site was getting due to this offer; some mentioned that they did not see the offer anywhere else, online.  As I mentioned before, there was no newspaper advertisement, only inserts in newspapers to tell people of this offer, and I think this is the reason why the organisers did not expect the numbers of people who actually turned out hoping to queue for a unit.

I know none of this is going to make people who missed the offer (having queued for two days, on Saturday and Sunday) feel any better.  I believe HTC also feels that the entire event could have been handled better (please note that I’m not speaking officially on their behalf though).  I have conveyed my feelings to them; in fact, they have been reading the coverage of the event on this blog.  I am hoping that they can somehow “do something” in order to assuage the hurt/disappointed feelings of the readers of this blog who missed out on the offer despite putting in genuine effort to get a unit – no promises on what HTC may or may not do, so please do not hold me to this “hope” – but if it happens, you’ll hear about it here first, hopefully.

As usual, I’m sure readers will chime in with their comments on what they feel about the whole situation.

Some Pictures From The HTC Touch2 Offer Event

Friday, October 9th, 2009

htc-logoI posted about a special offer from HTC for three days, beginning today (9th October), at 10am to Sunday 10pm, where a total of 65 units of the Touch2 smartphone which comes with Windows Mobile 6.5 is going to be on sale daily at a steep discount of 65% off its retail price.  As the retail price of the Touch2 is RM 1,599, this means that you can buy the Touch2 at RM 559.65.  And as I tweeted, one would be either stupid or silly, or heaven forbid, both, to miss an offer like this.  And since I do not like to call myself either, I decided to head on down to Sunway Pyramid to perhaps get a few to make some money.  I kid, of course.

So, imagine my horror when I got there at 945am, only to see that there were already more than 80-90 people in the queue in front of me.  Here are some pictures I took with my iPhone on the length of the queue when I got there.

So, here’s my advice if you really want to buy one:

  1. head on down there tomorrow or Sunday.  Plan to reach there at 6am or earlier.  You won’t probably get in, but I think you can queue up at the door right next to where they are holding the event on the “Blue Atrium” of Sunway Pyramid.  Why 6am?  The people in the queue were already starting to queue at this time, and today is a Friday, a working day.  So imagine what one has to do when it is a weekend?
  2. bring a foldable chair or something if you value your back.  Standing in line for more than 4 hours to enjoy a RM 1,000 discount is no fun.
  3. bring lots of patience.  When I left at 1115am just now, the queue was still there, the sale of the Touch2 had not started yet.  It was quite a disaster really.  There were a number of frustrated looking faces in the queue.
  4. try to insist on a queue number from the organiser.  You know the typical Malaysian style when there’s an opportunity to make easy money – people will cheat, lie, cut queue, murder, maim, etc to get what they want.
  5. only one unit per person.  If you want 20 units, bring along 19 other friends with you to queue up.

Drop a comment here if you manage to get your grubby hands on a unit!
