Garmin Mobile XT v5.00.50 For Symbian

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

garmin-nuvi-gpsThis is the latest version of the Garmin Mobile XT software for the Symbian platform, version 5.00.50, dated 15 April 2009. I tested it on the Nokia 5800, and it works fine; even when in map browsing mode, repeated panning of the map from left to right, top to bottom, for some minutes did not result in “freezing” or “hanging” of the software, unlike version 5.00.40.

Changelog from v5.00.40 to v5.00.50:

  • Provide ‘Exit’ option to the Activate Software page.
  • Correct the turn preview page in landscape orientation.
  • Correct an error that occurs when the ‘Arrival’ button is selected.
  • Correct the text color of the main map page when displayed in night mode.

To install, simply download the compressed RAR archive and open it using WinRAR or 7-Zip. Drag the contents of the “GMXT” directory to the root (ie. top folder) of your memory card. Answer “yes” when asked if you want to replace whatever folders and files during copying. Do not drag the entire “GMXT” folder, just the items inside it to the root of your memory card. Then, simply tap the GarminMobileXT.sis program in your phone’s file manager program to install it. Once done, you can delete the “GarminMobileXT.sis” program from the root of the memory card.  It may be advisable to backup your data (maps, saved POIs, etc) before upgrading in case something goes wrong.

If this is your first time installing, you need to install the world basemap and voice support files as well. And of course you will need to purchase a license to use the GMXT program; Google for resellers in your area. Or do whatever you have to do.

Download it here, here or here.

Nokia 5800 Now Supported By Garmin Mobile XT

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

garmin-logoThanks to “Toon899″ in the shoutbox, we now know that the latest Symbian version of Garmin Mobile XT (GMXT), version 5.00.30, released recently, now supports the Nokia 5800 running Symbian s60v5 natively, without the need for the VirtualKey software.  Damn, looks like the traffic on this site will go down soon, haha…

Download it here, or click here for another mirror.  You can, of course, download from the Garmin website, but I have kindly repacked it so that it only contains the necessary files for installation on the 5800.  What you need to do (really simple, no need for a detailed tutorial!):

  1. extract all files and folders from the package onto the root of your memory card.  That is, if your memory card is “E” drive, just drag and drop all folders and files in this package on to the E drive, not into any folder, but the “root” directory.
  2. there is no need to uninstall the current version of GMXT.
  3. install the latest version of GMXT by tapping on the “GarminMobileXT.sis” file in File Explorer on your phone.

So, all touch functions now work.  I haven’t tested extensively, but I think landscape display of the malsingmaps map work as well.  Drop a comment if you find any bugs!  Sorry, I can’t snap a screenshot in landscape mode, stupid ScreenSnap software!
