Maxis Mission:Possible

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Wow, looks like Maxis is releasing a number of new products/services lately.  Hot on the heels of its new Mobile Jukebox/Love Meter service, comes a Facebook interactive social game, called Maxis:Mission Possible.  As its name implies, this is a Facebook game in the veins of other games such as Farmville, etc.  More details in the press release below.  Maxis also recently launched a broadband package promotion offering a free USB modem, details below.

Maxis offers Something for Everyone on Facebook

Maxis launches interactive social game, celebrity interviews & an online forum

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 11 March 2010: Maxis Berhad (‘Maxis’), Malaysia’s leading communications provider, recently launched Maxis Mission: Possible, an interactive social game built for Facebook. Maxis Mission: Possible is an extension of the Maxis Broadband campaign, ‘Something for Everyone’, and incorporates the campaign characters – The Blogger, Traveller, Smart Shopper, Explorer, Online Buddies, Gamer and Entertainment Enthusiast.

It is a three episode adventure game that sets players on the hunt for stolen top secret data. As secret agents, players are jetted off to various locations to search for hidden items. Players can play as any of the seven different campaign characters, each with unique advantages and disadvantages.

Matthew Willsher, Maxis Chief Marketing Officer, said, “With mobile data usage growing rapidly in Malaysia, Maxis’ ‘Something for Everyone’ broadband campaign forms an important part of our wider efforts in facilitating seamless and affordable communication and information in the virtual space. The extension to Facebook is a natural move as there are now more than 5.2 million Malaysians on it. We are continuously exploring other engagement opportunities on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

“We are pleased to make this foray into Facebook to offer our customers a free, simple and fun game that reflects our conviction that mobile broadband has something to offer everyone. In Maxis Mission: Possible players can pick any one of the seven characters which they identify with, and explore the maps for hidden items. It’s a fun way of bringing the Maxis Broadband experience to life.”

Maxis Mission: Possible offers three different maps to players – The Music Festival, The Smugglers Island and The Airport. Players who are able to navigate the maps and find the hidden items in the shortest time will be rewarded with prizes which include a holiday for two to Gold Coast, Australia, iPhones, BlackBerry smartphones and cash prizes. The game is the first full-fledged Facebook application by Maxis, and was created in collaboration with Integricity Corporation Sdn Bhd and Mindshare. The Maxis Mission: Possible contest ends on 25 March 2010. Customers may visit http://www.facebook.com/maxis to begin their adventure and sign up to be Maxis fans.

Besides the game, the Maxis Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/maxis) will also be updated with fresh content in line with the ‘Something for Everyone’ campaign. Customers may sign up as fans to learn about the internet habits of Malaysia’s most popular personalities such as Sarah Lian, Radio DJ Ean, Daphne Iking and Dato’  Lee Chong Wei. The page also has a discussion forum, ‘Talkbox’, which encourages participants to share information including useful tips, reviews, and recommendations for shopping, blogging, entertainment and travelling.

In addition, Maxis recently launched a new broadband promotion which offers customers a FREE modem when they subscribe to the 1.5GB, 3GB and 6GB packages. These three packages come in a special promotional price from as low as RM48, RM68 and RM98 per month, respectively. Love Meter And Mobile Jukebox

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

With a title like that, you’d think this was a post about something that was “NSFW” (not safe for work).  But I assure you it is not.  They are two new services from Maxis, for its postpaid and prepaid Hotlink customers.  Maxis says that these two services are “new” and “innovative”.  Check out the press release below for details.

MOBILE JUKEBOX AND LOVE METER, FIRST-IN-MALAYSIA INNOVATIONS FROM MAXIS AND HOTLINK

Maxis and Hotlink are giving Malaysians, even more engaging and original, new mobile services

Kuala Lumpur, 10 March 2010 – Malaysia’s leading communications provider, Maxis Berhad (‘Maxis’) is pleased to announce new firsts in valued-added mobile services, available to all customers of Maxis and Hotlink, on the full range of mobile devices that they carry. The creative new services, Mobile Jukebox and Love Meter, add to Maxis and Hotlink’s extensive range of subscription options, to further the variety of ways in which customers can connect and be enriched.

Mobile Jukebox

For only RM2 a month, the Mobile Jukebox allows you to access anywhere, anytime and listen to your favourite music from a constantly updated and expanded list of thousands of songs, at the preferential call rate of RM0.10 per minute. You’ll enjoy the best titles in your choice of Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) and Tamil from the leading musicians of today in all key genres.

With Mobile Jukebox you won’t have to purchase a music/MP3 player or download particular software – likewise you won’t need to purchase and download music titles track by track. Instead, enjoy instant music on-the-go, in all major Malaysian languages, with just three keys needed to navigate between channels and songs and to add favourites to your own mobile music album or to replay a favourite.

Subscription to Mobile Jukebox is by dialing *100# followed by selection of ‘Mobile Jukebox’ and ‘Subscribe’.

You’ll then be offered a choice of languages, which when selected will bring up a choice of channels – thanks to the mobile music service’s repeat user intelligence feature, channels which you listen to most often will be tracked, and will be accessible first and within five seconds.

Love Meter

For only RM3 a month, Love Meter gives you an instant measure, for an unlimited number of calls, of how much interest is being experienced by the person to whom you initiated a call. During the call itself, you’ll be alerted to how engaged your friend or romantic interest is in the conversation with you, enabling you to respond more sensitively in return. Then right after your call, you’ll receive an SMS or MMS as preferred, confirming the Love Meter’s assessment in percentage terms. You’ll also receive a report of Very Low to Very High, in the specific areas of Anticipation, Concentration and Embarrassment, to help you understand the feelings of your call partner.

Customers who wish to subscribe, can simply dial *100#, select ‘Love Meter’, click on ‘Subscribe’ then select to receive the Love Meter’s report in either SMS or MMS. Then all it takes to activate the Love Meter at will, is to dial *143 followed by the call recipient’s number, reaching across Maxis and other service providers’ networks.

In a launch contest which ran from 18 January till Valentine’s Day on 14 February, Madam Soh Lee Beng from Segamat, Johor, won the grand prize of a pair of Tissot, his and her watches worth over RM2000, for accumulating the highest Love Meter scores across the month. She did this with the help of her 21-year-old son, who used Madam Soh’s phone to call his girlfriend and friends, liberally enjoying Love Meter’s features with the indulgence of family.

Said T. Kugan, Maxis’ Head of Products and Infotainment of the new services: “Mobile Jukebox and Love Meter were designed together with our leading application developers, to enrich the options and experiences which are possible with feature-rich mobile services.”

“Mobile Jukebox extends our commitment to mobile entertainment, and to making it easier to enjoy more content on an affordable basis, with fewer barriers and more personal choice. Love Meter taps into an essential aspect of communications with fun and ease, helping people to listen to each other better when in conversation. We hope that both these new and original services will delight our mobile communities.”

Maxis Launches Blackberry Bold 9700 At EXCLUSIVE Party

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

And no, bottom diggers like me were not invited.  Oh well, I can’t afford the Blackberry Bold 9700 anyway, now that I have to save up enough money to afford the Apple iPad.  So, on Monday, Maxis launched the Bold 9700 aka Bold 2, at a very exclusive party in which many celebrities attended as well as some important customers, those who were already using the Blackberry Bold.  See press release below.  I think Maxis was again upstaged by Celcom who had their launch earlier; this reminds me of the Blackberry Curve 8520 launch where much of Maxis thunder was taken away by Celcom with the latter launching it first; then DiGi took away more of Maxis’ manna by launching a dirt cheap (by Malaysian standards anyway) Blackberry Internet Service for consumers.

MAXIS LAUNCHES BLACKBERRY® BOLD™ 9700 AT EXCLUSIVE CUSTOMER PARTY
Postpaid customers enjoy 75% discount on Blackberry Internet Service package

Kuala Lumpur, 26 January 2010 – Malaysia’s leading integrated communications company, Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”), yesterday launched the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 at an exclusive party at Dome, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The party themed “Be Distinctly Bold with Maxis” saw about 100 specially invited BlackBerry Bold customers and celebrities coming together for a night of fashion, food and lucky draws. Among the celebrities present were television host Stephanie Chai, MixFM presenter Rudy, celebrity interior designer Eric Leong, television presenter William Quah and singer-songwriter Reshmonu. Six lucky guests walked away with BlackBerry smartphones from Maxis.

Matthew Willsher, Maxis’ Chief Marketing Officer, said, “Maxis has always been at the forefront of mobile communications and technology. We were the first operator to introduce the BlackBerry wireless solution in Malaysia in 2004 and have continued to lead the way with the introduction of a wide selection of BlackBerry smartphones for our customers. We are pleased to reward some of our most loyal customers with this special party.

“The BlackBerry Bold was one of the most sought after devices when it was launched in 2008 and its successor, the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 with its enhanced features will appeal to customers who value affordability, reliability and performance on their mobile devices. Maxis’ upgraded high speed 3G network provides an excellent experience for Blackberry users, and especially for the increasing number of customers who want to do more with their devices such as social networking. Maxis’ service appeals to customers who wish to enjoy the BlackBerry experience without any hassle and we offer easy upgrade programmes and special offers on Blackberry Internet service packages.”

Maxis, as Malaysia’s leading mobile data operator is pleased to offer the new BlackBerry Bold 9700 at the affordable retail price of RM2,099 for Maxis postpaid customers. During the special launch period from today until 28 February 2010, postpaid customers who purchase the new Blackberry Bold 9700 will be able to subscribe to the Maxis BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) Unlimited service package for a one year period with an up front payment of RM360, enjoying a 75% discount on the normal price of  RM1440.  The Unlimited package offers full service usage including email, instant messaging and social networking services and unlimited mobile internet browsing.

Willsher added, “We have good news for existing Maxis BlackBerry users who wish to purchase the smartphone from us. There will be a special upgrade programme where they will be given the option of upgrading to the new smartphone without voiding their previous contract. Maxis is the only telco to offer this upgrade programme.”

The new BlackBerry Bold 9700 is a refresh on one of the standout devices of last year. Since its introduction worldwide, it has received positive responses on its improved memory, fast processor and very strong battery life. The smartphone offers six hours of talk time and about 17 days of standby. The dark chrome frame, leatherette back and more ergonomic external design come together for a new device that is sleeker and more elegant, fitting firmly onto the palm of users’ hands.

The touch-sensitive trackpad acts just like the trackpad of a laptop computer, enhancing speeds in accessing menus and icons, and easing navigation in general.  Customers will also enjoy the 3.2 megapixel camera on the Blackberry Bold 9700 which comes with flash, autofocus, image stabilisation and 2x optical zoom.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 will be available at all Maxis Centres and Maxis Exclusive Partners nationwide from today onward. Maxis customers may contact 1800 821 123 for further details.

Maxis Chinese New Year Sale – Blackberry Curve 8520

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Well, as they say, better late than never.  After Celcom mopped up the market (I think) with their cheaper version of the Blackberry Curve 8520, Maxis steps in to capture the stragglers.  As part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, Maxis is offering the Curve 8520 for RM 188, if you pay for one year service upfront.  What a nice way to lock a customer into the network indeed.  So, if you pay RM 1,364 (which is not a very auspicious number in Chinese numerology, by the way, Maxis!) for the phone plus one year of the Blackberry Internet Service, that means you’re paying RM 98 per month for the BIS service.  For this price, I hope you’re getting unlimited BIS service instead of being restricted to just 40MB of bandwidth monthly.  Whether this is a good deal or not depends on you – I think it’s not too bad, considering that you need to pay RM 988 for a Celcom set and still need to pay Celcom a minimum of RM 48 (I think) monthly for the BIS service.

Blackberry Storm 2 aka 9520 On Celcom Soon

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Don’t we just love it when all three major celcos in the country try to vie for a share of our wallets?  Celcom, which claims to have 52% of the Blackberry market in Malaysia, as well as claiming to be the largest Blackberry seller in Southeast Asia, has advertised the availability of the 9520, otherwise known as the Storm 2, the successor to the not-so-successful Storm 1.  In a newspaper advertisement today, Celcom confirmed its (future) availability, as part of its annual sales campaign.  According to the Star, the 9520 will be available in early February, at a price yet to be announced; the packages are probably the standard ones where one can choose from the Executive plan 50, with a minimum RM50 monthly commitment, plus the Celcom Broadband Advance plan valued at RM 98, making a minimum monthly commitment of RM 148, to enjoy some small subsidy on the retail price of the phone.  I think the contract period is two years, as is usually the case with Celcom plans where the price of the mobile phone is subsidised.

Celcom claims to be targetting a sales volume of 70,000 units of various Blackberry models this calendar year, which translates to around 5,833 units monthly – difficult to say whether this is realistic or not without any sales reference numbers for other popular handsets.  But I am guessing this is all based on past performance, so it most likely has some basis in fact.  It’s nice to know that RIM is also pushing aggressively into the consumer space in Malaysia, just like it is in other parts of the world – it means consumers now have a rich picking of mobile operating systems to choose from.

There is still no word on when and whether Maxis and DiGi will be offering the Storm 2.

What do you think about the Storm 2?  Are you getting one?  I’m guessing the price will be in the region of RM 2,299 to RM 2,499.
