Thanks also to JC for sharing this with us in the shoutbox! So, does this hint at cheaper prices of HTC phones to come? You tell me – my lips are sealed for the moment, and will be unsealed soon enough. At these prices, you don’t even have to consider the competition – it would be almost silly not to buy an HTC phone! Can we dream of the HTC Legend below RM 2,000? The HTC Smart below RM 1,000? The HTC HD Mini at around RM 1,800? My lips are sealed – waterboard me all you want, I’m not saying anything! What about the HTC Desire? Cheaper than the Google Nexus One in Singapore after conversion into RM? Torture me, torture me!

No Buttons, No Upgrade

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

So says Microsoft on the possibility of existing devices, especially the new-ish HTC HD2, being upgraded to run Windows Phone 7 Series when it is released at the end of the year.  Many existing and future owners of the HD2 were hoping that their beloved devices would qualify for an upgrade; in fact, at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft actually said to wait until MIX 2010 which would commence in mid March for an official announcement.  So why the change of mind/heart now?  It’s certainly very strange.

The buttons I’m referring to are the three mandated to be on every Windows Phone 7 Series device – search (aka Bing), back and home buttons.  The HD2 actually has 5 buttons – make call, end call, back, home, start – 2 too many, but this is not thought to be the deal killer as far as upgrade went.  So, the HD2, although it meets many, if not all of the rumoured hardware specifications for Windows Phone 7 Series, does not qualify because it is missing the all important Bing search button.

A big ouch, if you ask me.  And yet another reason why sales of Windows Mobile devices will take a plunge this year.  Which means that companies like HTC will have to depend on other platforms to make their numbers – and since HTC only manufactures Windows Mobile and Android phones, it looks like their fortunes for 2010 depends very heavily on their relationship with Google!

HTC HD2 Runs An Early Build Of Windows Phone 7 Series?

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

A Dutch website claims that the current Windows Mobile flagship superphone from HTC, the HD2, was spotted running an early build of the latest and greatest in mobile operating system from Microsoft, announced at the Mobile World Congress, at the same venue where 7 Series was announced!  Many have commented that the HD2 does indeed have what it takes to qualify for an upgrade, although to date both Microsoft and HTC have remained mum on the matter.  After all, if a 1GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM is insufficient to run 7 Series, I shudder to think what the requirements would be (precise details have still not been released by Microsoft; instead, they say more details will be revealed at the upcoming MIX conference in Las Vegas in March 2010).

The early build running on the HD2 was said to be very fast, although many functions still did not work, such as the Zune multimedia functions.  That’s about all that was written, the authenticity of the article is still in question (a little).  Meanwhile, Microsoft’s official windowsphone Twitter account said that an announcement will be forthcoming at the MIX conference on the HD2’s upgradeability to Windows Phone 7 Series – so, if you’re a current HD2 owner, hope for some good news next month!

10 Tips For New HTC HD2 Users

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The pocketables website has a useful article on how a new user to the HTC HD2 can maximise the use of his/her new toy, without having to resort to installing custom firmwares or operating systems from the xda-developers website, which is the premier website to go to for all things HTC (basically “hacking” (in a good way) your device to make it even more useful).  I guess this is a useful way to break you into HTC devices easily, before attempting the more advanced stuff that is in the xda-developers website.  And trust me when I say this – installing custom firmwares or operating systems from that website does make the device more “usable”, for want of a better word.

Is There Hope For The Europe/Asian HTC HD2s After All?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

In this post, I reported that the European and Asian variants of the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile superphone may not have the requisite hardware specifications necessary to run Windows Mobile 7 when it is released, thus no easy and free upgrade to WinMo 7, based on rumoured WinMo 7 hardware requirements.  Well, it now appears that based on testing done by the xda-developers website, the site which hacks all HTC devices, that there is indeed a hidden part of the hardware that makes the European/Asian editions equivalent to the US version (the US version has not been released yet).  By installing a custom firmware, the xda developers website was able to make use of this “hidden” RAM, thus bumping up the RAM from the official specifications of 448MB to 576MB.  The ROM size on the European/Asian remained unchanged at 512MB, compared to a rumoured 1GB for the US version.  This means that if WinMo 7 does require 1GB of ROM then existing HTC HD2 owners are still left out in the cold as far as upgradeability to WinMo 7 goes.
