10 Things To Like About The Google Nexus One

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

…and 5 things to dislike.  This is the title of an article from the geardiary website, who had three persons review the new-ish Google Nexus One.  All of them used it for at least a month, and then came together to try to agree on the 10 things they liked about the phone, and 5 things not to like.  It’s not a technical read at all; more of an end-user perspective.  Some of the things they liked are not really applicable to Malaysia, such as Google’s Voice service, since we don’t get to enjoy it here, so it may subtract somewhat from the number of positive items.

Click here to have a read.  And I like the conclusions section where each of the three reviewers had their final say about the product.  As I read through the article, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and drop it did in the conclusions section!

AMOLED Isn’t That Great…Yet…

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

The buzz in screen technology nowadays is about the brightness, vividness and crispness of AMOLED, and lately, Samsung’s Super AMOLED (as found on its Wave S8500 bada smartphone) screens.  But apparently OLED technology doesn’t best the old LCD technology in all areas – it is still new, and is still maturing, and LCD is still better than OLED screens in some respects.

I don’t pretend to understand all the technobabble in this article which attempts to explain the areas where OLED technology still lags behind LCD, by comparing the Google Nexus One’s screen to the iPhone’s, so I’ll leave it to you to read it for yourself.  But I certainly think it is the way of the future, and Apple is even reportedly considering using the OLED technology in its next generation iPhone – at the moment, dubbed the “iPhone 4G”.

HTC Bravo On Orange UK Network in March?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

For a smartphone that’s not even officially acknowledged, let alone properly spec’ed out, we may need to take this news with a bit of a pinch of salt.  The cellphone-reviews website of the UK claims to have insider information that the HTC Bravo, essentially the same as the Google Nexus One (which was also manufactured by HTC for Google), apart from the inclusion of an optical trackpad rather than a trackball and the much-loved (by me anyway) Sense UI, will be launching on Orange’s network in March.  That’s less than a month away.  We’d better be seeing some confirmation from HTC soon on the leaked product roadmap at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, scheduled to begin on Monday, 15th February!

Whatever the case, the HTC Bravo is a smartphone which many are waiting for, especially as a replacement to the HTC Hero.  Who needs Google to sell the lame Nexus One in Malaysia, beset with some major issues, when you can have the beautiful Bravo loaded with Sense?  ;-)  News has it that the Bravo will be launching in our local market after the HTC Legend (another Android smartphone).  The Bravo is supposedly launching in Singapore towards the end of March, according to my “sources” there.

Google Buzz: Edit Your Profile, Pronto!

Friday, February 12th, 2010

If you are one of the lucky ones in Malaysia to have Google’s new social network feed aggregation service called Google Buzz activated for you already, beware that by default, the list of people following you, as well as the list of people you are following, are visible to the world by anyone who views your Google profile.  A Google profile is created once you set up Google Buzz, whether you like it or not.  If you haven’t done anything to set Buzz up, although you’ve received an invitation, don’t worry – you are not at risk, as long as you continue not to start using it at all.

Rather than writing another tutorial to help you set the lists above to private, viewable only by yourself, follow this guide by the lifehacker website.  And in case you’re one of those who think what the (%*#)_! deal is about buzz, ie. what’s the buzz about Buzz (sorry, bad pun!), then you can also follow this guide to either hide it or turn it off completely.

Google Buzz

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Google has slowly started to roll out its new service called “Buzz” which is basically a social network feed in your GMail window.  If you don’t see the welcome page when you are “activated” for this feature when you login into your GMail account (I saw mine this morning), then don’t panic, they’re still rolling it out as they say on their webpage – “We’re still rolling out Buzz to everyone, so if you don’t see it in your Gmail account yet, check back soon.

Buzz is a service that allows you to “Share updates, photos, videos, and more.  Start conversations about the things you find interesting.”  There’s no setup or installation required – it just uses your existing GMail inbox.  You can “Import your stuff from Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, and Google Reader.”  These “feeds” appear in your inbox, just like your email, so you can follow conversations and updates easily.  Visit the Buzz page for more information.

So, have you been buzzed?
