Asus eeePC 1005P In Malaysia

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Following on from my post about the Asus eeePC 1005PE being available in Malaysia for the price of RM 1,499, the eeePC 1005P now makes an appearance.  The 1005P is a lighter (hardware specifications wise, not weight!) and hence cheaper than the PE – although it comes with the new Intel Atom Pine View N450 1.66GHz processor, the hard disk is only 160GB in capacity.  It comes with Windows 7 Basic and has a 10.2″ LED display.  The battery capacity is also reportedly smaller than the 1005PE, but I can’t say for sure whether this is a 3 cell or lower capacity 6 cell battery, because for the life of me, I can’t seem to find this model anywhere on the Asus US, UK or Malaysia websites!  Additionally, I am unsure if it even comes with Bluetooth, in the absence of official specifications!  I am getting these specifications from the internet as well as the price list of a shop in Lowyat Plaza.

The 1005P sells for RM 1,299.  It should be available from your favourite netbook retailer in Lowyat Plaza now.

Asus eeePC 700 2G Surf For RM649

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

asus-logoLooking a small netbook just for surfing?  Here’s one of the earliest netbooks on planet Earth, from Asus.  It’s only got a 2GB hard disk (hence why I say it’s only good for surfing!), a Celeron 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM, but it does run Windows XP rather well.  It should come with a 4400mAh battery which should be good for around 3 hours of operation.  This is a bare bones unit, hence the price.

This thing runs Google Chrome OS off a USB stick just fine – everything on it works, with no tweaking required.  But with the price of a “full” netbook from MSI at RM 899 for the U100, I guess there won’t be too many takers for this.

And Tesco Sells The eeePC

Friday, September 18th, 2009

asus-logoBut it’s such a great big pity that it’s a really old model, dating back to the dinosaur ages.  But we shall not hold that against Tesco now, shall we?  Back to the matter at hand, Tesco is selling the eeePC 700 2G Surf model at RM 699.  This must be some excess stock from some western country that some enterprising company brought into Malaysia to get rid of.

asus eeepc 700 2 surf at tescoClick here for the page of the latest brochure from where this screenshot was taken.  The specifications, as you can see in the picture above, are:

  • Celeron 900MHz processor.
  • 512Mb RAM.
  • 2Gb SSD (no, you didn’t read wrongly, it’s really 2Gb!).
  • Genuine Windows XP Home.

That tiny hard disk is a killer.  However, I believe there’s a multi-card reader so you can slot in a 8Gb/16Gb SD card to increase the storage capacity to at least make the eeePC usable.  Otherwise, you would only probably buy this as a Christmas present for your pet dog.  I kid you not!

So, rush on over to your nearest Tesco outlet to get one, if you are so inclined!

Asus Slowly Running Out Of eee’s

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

asus-logoTwo supposedly leaked product roadmap slides which are making their way around the internet these few days purportedly shows the eeePC roadmap from Asus for the remainder of this year.  There is nothing particularly earth shattering about the contents of the slides, and only it contains one “really new” product – the 1201N.  As you can guess from the numerical product number, this is a 12 inch netbook/notebook from Asus which unfortunately still uses the weak Intel Atom N270 processor, but this time, coupled with an nVidia ION chipset which boosts the “very weak” graphics performance (using the Intel integrated graphics) to somewhat “relatively weak” levels.  Yawn.  This is not very interesting at all.  Two other refreshed netbooks – the 1005HA-P and 1005HA-M – will also make an appearance, with higher capacity hard disks and higher capacity batteries which boost operating time up to a claimed 10.5 hours.  Both will come with Windows 7, either Home Premium or Starter editions, depending on where you are in the world.  As expected, many of these new/refreshed eeePC models will be released after Windows 7 is released.  And the biggest surprise is that none of these models come with a new processor, which half confirms that the new Pine Trail processor (the successor to the current Atom line) from Intel could be delayed, or released too late for holiday shopping season this year.

The existing 1101HA model will be terminated (thank goodness for that!) while the 1008HA will also get a refresh, but most unfortunately, will still be equipped with the Atom processor.  Asus must have a lot of these Atom chips to clear from their stockpile in the warehouse!  Meanwhile, the existing tablet PC model from Asus, the eeePC T91 with the 9″ screen, will be refreshed to include multi-touch capability, and there may be a T101 (a 10″ tablet) introduced, should Asus deem the T91’s performance to be satisfactory enough to increase the screen size in a new model – the jury’s still out on the success or otherwise of the T91.  I quite liked the T91 when I played with it though – the only drawback was the small-ish screen size, and the non-upgradeability of components.  The 2 cell battery was also somewhat a deal killer, which is a pity indeed for a well constructed device.

If this is confusing, don’t worry, you’re not the only one.  I’m quite sure some people within Asus are also a little perplexed at the variety of eeePCs out there.  If you want more details, go to this site which explains things rather clearly.

Some Updates On Local Asus eeePC Pricing

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

asus-logoIf you’re a fan of Asus netbooks, here’s a quick update on the local pricing of the eeePC family of products.  I was told that there were three new introductions during the last PC Fair which concluded about two weeks ago – the eeePC Touch T91, 1008HA and 1005HA.  The T91 is an 8.9″ touchscreen netbook with hardly any upgrade options apart from the RAM.  The 1008HA is the Seashell model, the ultrathin, if you like, while the 1005HA is the “upgradeable” version of the 1008HA, but with a slightly thicker form factor.  All three netbooks sport the Atom processor, the T91 using the Z series, and the 1008HA and 1005HA using the N series.

The T91 sells for RM 1,899 (although I’ve seen it for sale at RM 1,999, so shop carefully and smartly!), the 1008HA for RM 1,799 while the 1005HA sells for RM 1,599.  And as I mentioned in a previous post, the 1101HA, the 11″  netbook from Asus, sells for RM 1,899 (although, again, I’ve seen it for sale at RM 1,999, so caveat emptor!).

Check out some screenshots of the price list I got below.  Do shop around for a better deal – lower price if you pay cash, additional freebies such as mouse, carrying case, etc.
