Another Alienware M11x Review

Friday, March 5th, 2010

The Dell Alienware M11x is the first gaming netbook, if we can call it that.  It’s an 11″ netbook with a ULV (ultra low voltage) processor, with a discrete graphics cards, in this case, an nVidia GeForce GT 335M Discrete Graphics (1GB GDDR3) video memory, with an option to switch over to the Intel integrated graphics to conserve battery power when video performance is not required.

We’ve seen some early reports and reviews, and here’s another one.  The reviewer says that the processor can be overclocked from 1.3GHz to 1.73GHz (!) although this would come at the expense of a much shorter battery life, and one does run the risk of burning the processor early.  However, overclocking has some big benefits, notably when running graphically demanding games.  There are quite a few benchmarking statistics in the article, so click through if you’re interested to know more.  Generally, the experience is positive, and the author of the article says that the experience should get even better if one were to substitute a fast solid state disk (SSD) for the slower (spinning) hard disk.  On a more modest setting, the review could get close to 4 hours of running time on batteries watching movies – not too shabby, considering the power of this machine.

I must say that I am very very tempted already with all these positive reviews.  If it was selling for RM 2,999, I would have pulled the (purchase) trigger a long time ago, but at RM 3,499 I’d have to think twice…maybe thrice!  :P

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 With HD Screen Resolution

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Finally, we have an option to add high definition screen resolution to a netbook.  So, as far as I know, the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with the new Intel Atom Pine Trail N450 processor becomes the first netbook in Malaysia to offer an upgrade to high definition resolution.  Most, if not the vast majority of netbooks come with a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, and now the Mini 10 can up this to 1366 x 768 pixel resolution for an additional RM 50.  Yes, a measly RM 50.  Now whether you can read text properly on a 10 inch screen with 1366 x 768 resolution or not without increasing default system font size to 125% is another question, but at least you can now boast that you can watch high definition videos on your netbook.  And whether high definition movies can play properly on your netbook is again another question entirely!

Dell Alienware M11x Reviewed

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It’s nice to know that sometimes *the* IT/tech website on the interwebs, engadget, has to rely on kind-hearted readers to send them new gadgets for review!  This time, it’s the Dell Alienware M11x, the 11 inch gaming netbook from Dell/Alienware.  If you are not in the know, Alienware is a renowned brand in the portable gaming industry, and was purchase by Dell a couple of years ago.  The M11x is the first from Alienware in such a “petite” form, and by petite I mean smaller, not necessarily thinner!

The M11x comes with its own separate/discrete graphics card and is the reason why it is called a portable gaming powerhouse.  It sells in Malaysia for RM 3,499, which I initially covered here.  One of my favourite features must be the tremendously configurable backlighting – on the keyboard (a rarity in smaller sized, cheaper notebooks) as well as on the buttons on the device.  The screen, according to engadget, is bright, sharp and has very good viewing angles.  The biggest drawback of course, is the lower performance low power consumption processor, but this can’t really be avoided in a form factor like this.  Nonetheless, it still out-performs the Atom netbooks on the market today by a very large margin.  And engadget says “It’s hard not to love the M11x after spending some time with it“.  So there you go.  If you have the money, splash some on the 11x!
