Asus eeePC 1005P In Malaysia

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Following on from my post about the Asus eeePC 1005PE being available in Malaysia for the price of RM 1,499, the eeePC 1005P now makes an appearance.  The 1005P is a lighter (hardware specifications wise, not weight!) and hence cheaper than the PE – although it comes with the new Intel Atom Pine View N450 1.66GHz processor, the hard disk is only 160GB in capacity.  It comes with Windows 7 Basic and has a 10.2″ LED display.  The battery capacity is also reportedly smaller than the 1005PE, but I can’t say for sure whether this is a 3 cell or lower capacity 6 cell battery, because for the life of me, I can’t seem to find this model anywhere on the Asus US, UK or Malaysia websites!  Additionally, I am unsure if it even comes with Bluetooth, in the absence of official specifications!  I am getting these specifications from the internet as well as the price list of a shop in Lowyat Plaza.

The 1005P sells for RM 1,299.  It should be available from your favourite netbook retailer in Lowyat Plaza now.

Asus 1005PE Netbook With Intel Pine Trail Reviewed

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Liliputing reviewed the new Asus eeePC 1005PE netbook with the new Intel Atom N450 processor recently.  I covered the 1005PE in this post, and it’s already available in the Malaysia market for a recommended retail price of RM 1,499.  It’s not the cheapest Pine Trail netbook by a long shot, because other similar models are selling for “only” RM 1,299.

Liliputing’s verdict is that there is only one reason to upgrade to a 1005PE from an earlier version of the eeePC – the stellar battery life.  Asus claims a 14 hour battery life, but in reality the review only got around 10+ hours, which is still shockingly long by any netbook standard.  And the good news is that the battery doesn’t look ugly like other extended batteries on other netbooks.  Performance wise, it’s the same as the other older netbooks with the older N280 processor, which is to say, disappointing.

More Netbooks With Intel Pine Trail Processors

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Wow, the netbooks equipped with the new Intel Atom Pine Trail aka N450 processors are appearing fast, even faster than rabbits breed!  Today, we have the new Asus 1005PE as well as the Samsung N210 and N150.  Let’s talk about the Asus eeePC 1005PE first.  As mentioned, it comes with an N450 processor, running at 1.66GHz, with 250GB of hard disk, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Starter Edition.  It retails for RM 1,499, which is still RM 200 more expensive than its competitors.  Asus probably still thinks that its branding and the fact that it “invented” the netbook industry still commands a premium that consumers are willing to pay for.  Either that, or they can claim that their netbook runs longer than competing models from Acer and Dell, both of which are selling for RM 1,299.

Rather unsurprisingly, the 1005PE is not even on the Malaysia website.  It’s not even on the Singapore nor UK websites, so it must be really new.  And the webmaster must have been sleeping on the job, and is probably still napping away, with no time to update the site.

Next up, we have the new Samsung N210 and N150, both equipped with the N450 processor as well.  The former sells for an RRP of RM 1,499, while the latter sells for RM 1,299.  Both come with 250GB of hard disk space, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Starter edition.  The only difference that I can see between the two models is the screen – the N210 probably comes with a better screen technology because its battery is capable of lasting up to 12 hours (!), while the N150 can only last up to 8.5 hours.  Samsung netbooks are renowned, just like Asus’ for their long battery life.

Detailed reviews for both models are still in progress because they are very new, I presume – I couldn’t find any authoritative reviews on the internet.

Dell Inspiron 11z Reviewed

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

If you’re in the market for a new netbook, specifically an 11 incher, and are still unsure as to which of the brands and models to get, perhaps liliputing’s review of the Dell Inspiron 11z will help you on your way.  The Inspiron 11z sports one of the new CULV processors, popular in the emerging segment that we call the “thin-and-lights”.

The review benchmarks the performance of the 11z against other netbooks such as the Acer Aspire 1410 and the Asus UL20A.  The takeaways from the review are:

  1. the 6 cell battery is ugly as it protrudes straight downwards at the back of the netbook, resulting in a tilt on the entire device.
  2. touchpad is not so great.
  3. performance improvement over a slightly lower spec’ed model may not be worth the extra cost.

If it was up to me, I’d probably get the Acer Aspire 1410 or the 1810, and still save around RM 300, at least, over the price of the Inspiron 11z!

Asus eeePC 700 2G Surf For RM649

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

asus-logoLooking a small netbook just for surfing?  Here’s one of the earliest netbooks on planet Earth, from Asus.  It’s only got a 2GB hard disk (hence why I say it’s only good for surfing!), a Celeron 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM, but it does run Windows XP rather well.  It should come with a 4400mAh battery which should be good for around 3 hours of operation.  This is a bare bones unit, hence the price.

This thing runs Google Chrome OS off a USB stick just fine – everything on it works, with no tweaking required.  But with the price of a “full” netbook from MSI at RM 899 for the U100, I guess there won’t be too many takers for this.
