10 Things To Like About The Google Nexus One

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

…and 5 things to dislike.  This is the title of an article from the geardiary website, who had three persons review the new-ish Google Nexus One.  All of them used it for at least a month, and then came together to try to agree on the 10 things they liked about the phone, and 5 things not to like.  It’s not a technical read at all; more of an end-user perspective.  Some of the things they liked are not really applicable to Malaysia, such as Google’s Voice service, since we don’t get to enjoy it here, so it may subtract somewhat from the number of positive items.

Click here to have a read.  And I like the conclusions section where each of the three reviewers had their final say about the product.  As I read through the article, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and drop it did in the conclusions section!

HTC Legend Reviewed

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Following on from their unboxing video, slashgear has now published their full review of the new HTC Legend.  In short, they liked it.  The Friendstream feature, a part of the upgraded HTC Sense user interface, comes in for special mention.  So does its build quality and form factor.  It is said to be a worthy successor to the HTC Hero.  Slashgear has this to say as part of the conclusion:

Nonetheless, even if it remained as it is today, the HTC Legend is an impressive device. It no longer occupies the top-spot in HTC’s Android range – the imminent Desire will take that position – but it’s arguably more attractive and pocket-friendly than its sibling.

I think this is going to be a good device for someone  just getting started in the Android world.  For those who are upgrading from the Hero, this seems to be a good choice as well.  Many are waiting for the Desire, but I think the Desire will be the high end smartphone and command a price premium to justify this.  Whether this premium is justified or not depends on the user’s usage scenario – if you don’t need the bells and whistles of the Desire, the Legend will do just as fine.  And I think HTC must do a good job of differentiating the two handsets so that there is no unnecessary confusion in the market.

HTC Desire To Get Update To Playback DivX Video In The Future

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Chalk this one up to “huh”?  Even before the HTC Desire aka Bravo has even launched, it appears that support to decode/playback DivX videos is in the works, but it won’t appear in the first units of the Desire which is scheduled to ship sometime next month (not in Malaysia but most likely in Europe and the US).  This must be one of those rare cases when an update has been announced before a handset is even shipping!

Personally, I would have much preferred it if the ship date was delayed a little to build this feature in.

Android Handsets Galore At The PC Fair!!!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Sadly, a PC Fair in another country.  Indonesia, to be exact.  My good friend artic_xp just sent me these pictures of flyers from the Jakarta PC Fair, specifically for Android handsets.  There is an embarassment of riches in terms of choices there.  You can choose from HTC (obviously!), Motorola, Samsung, Huawei, SonyErcisson and LG.  The one that will interest us the most is the SonyEricsson Xperia X10 – from the looks of it, I think the handset is actually scheduled to start shipping in Indonesia, like, right about now from April 5th onwards.  Obviously, the picture is cut off at the bottom, so let’s wait for artic_xp to come in with his thoughts, since he was there.  And sadly, from the brief time he fingered the device he wasn’t impressed by the speed vis-a-vis his HTC Hero – he expected a lot more speed from that 1GHz Snapdragon processor.  Perhaps SE’s Timescape and Mediascape application sucks up too much juice?

In case you’re wondering, the Galaxy Spica from Samsung was previously known as the Galaxy Lite.  The Huawei U8220 is known as the T-Mobile Pulse in the US.  To save you time by not having to hunt down exchange rates, here are the translated prices of the handsets (don’t worry, everyone’s a millionaire in Indonesia!):

  1. Motorola Milestone – RM 2,400 (expensive!!!)
  2. Samsung Galaxy Spica – RM 1,200 (dirt cheap!!!)
  3. SonyEricsson Xperia X10 – RM 2,800 (really expensive!!!)
  4. Huawei U8220 – RM 1,200 (really cheap!!!)
  5. LG GW 620 – RM 1,400 (cheap!!!)

Thanks, artic!  I’m sure it was an Android lover’s wet dream come true!

Here’s What An Android Phone Would Look Like…

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

…if Apple was successful in getting the courts to agree with them on the patents being infringed upon by HTC.  If you recall, Apple filed suit against HTC, alleging that HTC infringed on 20 of its patents.  Among the more recognisable ones, especially if you were an iPhone and Android user, are the slide to unlock gesture to wake a phone from a standby state, auto rearranging of application icons on the homescreen upon the addition or deletion of an application, and scrolling by dragging anywhere on the screen.  If these were found to be the intellectual property of Apple, here’s what a Google Android based phone would look:

Funny, eh?  And most commentators are saying that this suit is actually more against Google’s Android rather than HTC, and that poor HTC was caught in the middle because of its prolific portfolio of Android handsets!
