Is The Acer Aspire 1820PT Finally Making An Appearance?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Remember the saga called the Acer Aspire 1820PTZ?  It appeared in flyers inserted into newspapers in October 2009, and even appeared on Acer Malaysia’s website.  Then, inexplicably, it disappeared.  Calls to Acer Malaysia from people keen to buy the device were met with non-committal answers.  Until today, we still do not know if it is coming to our shores; indeed, we don’t even know if the device is as real as the Loch Ness Monster.

But engadget is now reporting that it is indeed coming.  No reasons were given for the delay at all.  They claim it will sell for US$599, by assuming that its price in Euro, €599, will translate one-for-one into US dollar pricing.  I hope it does, because if the price is indeed US$599, this translates to RM 2,010, but if the price is €599, this translates to RM 2,745.  Big difference!  And the price in the flyers in Malaysia before it went MIA was RM 2,299, I recall.

Acer Liquid e Hands On

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Slashgear shot a short hands on with the new Liquid e at the recent Mobile World Congress and came away feeling ambivalent about it.  One thing’s for sure – it’s only a small upgrade from the existing Liquid A1 smartphone, with the only difference being Android 2.1 powering the smartphone.  It’s also not going to give the Google Nexus One nor HTC Desire, a serious run for their money, although all three smartphones come equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor.

Click here for the hands on.

The Acer Liquid e

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The “e” in the name most likely denoting “eclair” which is the codename for the most current Android build as of today – version 2.1.  So, no earth shattering changes here from Acer – this is simply the already-released A1/Liquid smartphone, updated to support Android 2.1.  Rather sad is the fact that the smartphone is still neutered to 768MHz although it is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor.  Even more sadly, although the Liquid has gone on sale here in Malaysia, unless Google changes their minds, we will still be left without access to the Android Market.

No word on pricing nor release date, unfortunately.

Here’s the official press release:

The Acer A1 Liquid In Malaysia

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

The Acer Liquid Android smartphone, Acer’s first Android smartphone, has gone on sale in Malaysia at long last.  If you recall, this is a Qualcomm Snapdragon powered Android smartphone, the same processor that powers the Google Nexus One Android smartphone, so it should equally be as powerful.  Sadly, Acer, in all their wisdom, decided to limit the clockspeed of the processor to 768MHz, although, according to the reviews out there, this has not affected performance at all.

The A1 Liquid is selling for RM 1,899, and since it only has a rather small built-in internal memory, comes packaged with a 2GB microSD card.  While wandering around in Lowyat Plaza semi-aimlessly just now, the best deal I could find was RM 1,899 for the Liquid smartphone + a 4GB microSD card, in you’re interested to buy one.  It’s available in black or white.

Two other “sad” things to note about the Liquid, although at RM 1,899 it is the cheapest-most-powerful Android smartphone on the Malaysian market today – it still runs Android 1.6 when the latest and greatest is at least 2.0, and there is still no Android Market (why does this not surprise anyone anymore?).  Instead of the Market, one has to use SlideMe, which has far far far far far far far far less choices than the market, in terms of the items available for free download/purchase.  So there you go.

If you ask me, I’d avoid any non-HTC branded Android smartphones at the moment – for one very simple reason – there is this huge community called xda-developers which hack all sorts of things on to HTC devices, so even if you purchased an HTC branded Android smartphone without the Android Market, it is relatively straightforward to install a custom firmware on it which does include the Market.  Can we say the same for other manufacturers?  ;-)

Lenovo X100e In Malaysia

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

The Lenovo Thinkpad X100e, Lenovo’s offering in the 11.6 inch screen netbook space, is part of the Thinkpad range renowned for the build quality.  If I am not mistaken, this model competes with Acer’s Ferrari One netbook.  Both use the AMD processor, supposedly AMD’s alternative to Intel’s Atom, but which provides more power but at the cost of shorter battery life.

The one sad thing about the X100e, as I wrote about here, is its short battery life – even with a 6 cell battery, it only lasts around 3.5 hours, which shows that AMD still has a ways to go before rivalling Intel’s power saving or rather, power sipping, technology present in Intel’s Atom processors.  Among the hardware specifications of the X100 include an AMD MV40 processor running at 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM,  250GB of hard disk space, multi-touch touchpad, 6 cell battery, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Two models are apparently on sale in Malaysia – one without an operating system (if you don’t consider DOS an operating system!), and one that comes with Windows 7.  The price for the former is RM 1,669, for the latter, RM 2,169.  Both are on sale at the IT store in e@curve, Petaling Jaya.
