Another Alienware M11x Review

Friday, March 5th, 2010

The Dell Alienware M11x is the first gaming netbook, if we can call it that.  It’s an 11″ netbook with a ULV (ultra low voltage) processor, with a discrete graphics cards, in this case, an nVidia GeForce GT 335M Discrete Graphics (1GB GDDR3) video memory, with an option to switch over to the Intel integrated graphics to conserve battery power when video performance is not required.

We’ve seen some early reports and reviews, and here’s another one.  The reviewer says that the processor can be overclocked from 1.3GHz to 1.73GHz (!) although this would come at the expense of a much shorter battery life, and one does run the risk of burning the processor early.  However, overclocking has some big benefits, notably when running graphically demanding games.  There are quite a few benchmarking statistics in the article, so click through if you’re interested to know more.  Generally, the experience is positive, and the author of the article says that the experience should get even better if one were to substitute a fast solid state disk (SSD) for the slower (spinning) hard disk.  On a more modest setting, the review could get close to 4 hours of running time on batteries watching movies – not too shabby, considering the power of this machine.

I must say that I am very very tempted already with all these positive reviews.  If it was selling for RM 2,999, I would have pulled the (purchase) trigger a long time ago, but at RM 3,499 I’d have to think twice…maybe thrice!  :P

Is The Acer Aspire 1820PT Finally Making An Appearance?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Remember the saga called the Acer Aspire 1820PTZ?  It appeared in flyers inserted into newspapers in October 2009, and even appeared on Acer Malaysia’s website.  Then, inexplicably, it disappeared.  Calls to Acer Malaysia from people keen to buy the device were met with non-committal answers.  Until today, we still do not know if it is coming to our shores; indeed, we don’t even know if the device is as real as the Loch Ness Monster.

But engadget is now reporting that it is indeed coming.  No reasons were given for the delay at all.  They claim it will sell for US$599, by assuming that its price in Euro, €599, will translate one-for-one into US dollar pricing.  I hope it does, because if the price is indeed US$599, this translates to RM 2,010, but if the price is €599, this translates to RM 2,745.  Big difference!  And the price in the flyers in Malaysia before it went MIA was RM 2,299, I recall.

Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t Reviewed

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

The Wall Street Journal reviewed Lenovo’s touchscreen netbook, otherwise called a “tablet” since Apple popularised the term with its iPad product.  Verdict?  It’s a little slow, and I guess the reviewer doesn’t have a lot of experience reviewing netbooks nor anything powered by an Intel Atom processor!  Overall however, they liked the multi-touch features of the touchscreen, although they complained that the screen was overly glossy for watching videos, especially in a brightly lit environment; not surprising as this is a feature of new netbooks nowadays, and which, for the record, I hate – give me back my matte screens anytime!

Lenovo S10-2 With Built In 3G

Friday, February 26th, 2010

While walking around rather aimlessly today in PJ’s DigitalMall, I stumbled across a netbook with built in 3G connectivity, a rarity indeed in Malaysia.  Another rarity was its price – only RM 1,399.  But you have to live with older specifications though – it’s only got an Intel Atom N280 processor running at 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard disk.  As usual, it comes with the other “usual suspects” – WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, webcam, 6 cell battery and Windows XP Home SP3.

You have to remember that newer models with a newer processor (the Intel Atom N450 at 1.66GHz), larger hard disk and sometimes more RAM is only selling at RM 1,299.  So, you’re effectively paying more than a RM 100 premium for built in 3G connectivity, but if you ask me, this is a small price to pay because the performance differential between the older N280 and newer N450 processors is very minimal.

Leave a comment if you want to know where it’s sold.  Sorry, no pictures – but it’s the same as the S10-2 with only an embedded 3G modem thrown in, which is internal anyway, so there’s no external changes!

Sony VAIO X Slightly Less X-rated In Price

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

If you’ve been holding out on a purchase of the new-ish Sony VAIO X, Sony’s offering in the 11 inch netbook segment, will a RM 300 tip you over the edge into purchasing one?  Sony Malaysia is having a promotion for the silver coloured higher end model – the one that comes with a less lame Atom Z550 2.0GHz processor.  Part of the obscene pricing can be explained by the use of a high capacity 128GB solid state disk, which already costs an arm and two legs in its own right.  So, now, instead of the usual RM 5,299, you pay RM 4,999, and get a free Golla sleeve thrown in for good measure!

Now, I don’t know why the promotions page is saying RM 4,999 and the product details page is RM 5,299.  But then again, in my experience, Sony Malaysia’s website team has never been the fastest to correct errors – remember the fiasco with the pricing of the SonyEricsson Aino?
