Dell’s 7 Days Of Deals

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Who else but my good friend, artic_xp, who spots these kinds of offers?  It’s not surprising really, since artic checks the Dell website at least 8 times daily for just these types of good deals.  This time, it runs from 19th February to 25th February.  There are coupon codes for additional discounts, for selected items.  Click here for details.

That Zino and Zino HD looks mighty attractive with RM 100 off, making them RM 799 and RM 1,099 respectively.  Yes, the cheapest model only comes with the super-duper lame Intel N230 processor, but for RM 799 for a branded desktop, albeit without monitor and operating system is hard to resist if you’re looking for a cheap storage or always-on internet desktop!  Or, get the more powerful Zino HD at only RM 1,099, discounted.

Thanks, artic!

The 27″ Monster From Dell

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Now, now, don’t go having dirty thoughts now, especially so close to the Chinese New Year!  This is the new ultra-sharp computer monitor from Dell, all 27 inches of it, in a stunningly high resolution.  And I thought my existing 24 incher from Dell at a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels was plenty enough, but obviously Dell doesn’t agree with me.

So, the U2711 Ultrasharp monitor from Dell sports a resolution of 2560 x 1440, otherwise known as “WQHD” for those in the know.  It comes packed with all the latest features you would expect in a computer monitor:

  • High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
  • 2 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
  • DisplayPort (DP)
  • Video Graphics Array (VGA)
  • Component Video
  • Composite Video
  • 1 USB 2.0 upstream port
  • 4 USB 2.0 downstream ports
  • 8 in 1 Media reader
  • DC power connector for Dell Soundbar

And hey, it’s got that new IPS technology – the same that will be used in Apple’s new iPad!

The only scary thing is the price - RM 2,899 – but I guess for such a high resolution as this, one would be willing to pay the price.  As to the target market for this thing, I would hazard a guess that it will only appeal to the creative folks – Photoshoppers and video editors?  Or are there any other uses for it?  I certainly wouldn’t be buying one to hook it up to my netbook, which already struggles with pumping out 1920 x 1080 pixels of resolution to my existing monitor!  Imagine how slow my entire system would be if it had to pump out WQHD resolution (assuming it can even do this!).

Friday, December 11th, 2009

acer-logoHere’s a nice surprise from Acer Malaysia – they’re making the new T230H multi-touch LCD monitor available for sale soon after its worldwide announcement back in October.  Here’s a blurb from the product’s page on Acer Singapore – unsurprisingly, it’s not on the Malaysia website, nor is it on the US nor UK websites!

Looking at the specifications below, I am guessing that you use the HDMI/VGA/DVI port to connect to your computer for the display, and use an additional USB cable to connect to your computer for the multi-touch gestures to “register”, which likely means the installation of an additional piece of software on your computer.  And it apparently only supports Windows 7.

The price?  A princely RM 919 for a 23 inch monitor!  But at least it supports a variety of display input options, has built in speakers, has a 2ms grey-to-grey response time, which is considered pretty darned good for an LCD monitor, and it comes with 3 years warranty.  I think with these “extras” the price is not too bad.  I’ll try to get a hands-on the next time I’m in the Acer concept store in LowYat Plaza.
