The Hour Is Nigh

Friday, March 12th, 2010

No, no, I haven’t ventured into the doomsayer business, silly.  I’m referring to the fact that one can now place an order for the new Apple iPad soon, in a couple of hours time.  To be specific, beginning 530am Pacific Time, US.  Of course this is for US folks only, which leaves us in the lurch unless you happen to know someone in the US, who is willing to help you get one, and who is coming back to Malaysia very soon.

Or you can use a service called vPost.  This is a service operated by Singapore Post.  In a nutshell, you go on the Apple online store.  You place an order for the iPad.  You pay for it using your Malaysian credit card (assuming one can pay for purchases using a Malaysian credit card in the US online store!).  You then instruct Apple to ship the iPad to a collection facility in the US, whose address vPost will give you once you sign up as a customer.  vPost then batches shipments and sends them to Singapore, to save on shipping costs.  From Singapore, your beloved iPad is then shipped to you in Malaysia.

So, to sum up, you pay Apple for the iPad (plus any applicable shipping costs), and you pay vPost for the shipping from the US to Malaysia.  Now whether vPost will help you clear the iPad through Customs and SIRIM or not is another matter altogether, because I can tell you for sure that the iPad will be held back in Customs, since they have these super-duper shiny new x-ray machines that can see within a package without having to open them up.  How else do you think Customs have become so efficient at sniffing out the “right” merchandise to be taxed?  ;-)

Click here to find out more.  The service is also available for Singaporeans as well, click here if you’re interested.  Obviously this service does not only apply to the Apple Store – you can in fact shop at any US online store that doesn’t ship to Malaysia/Singapore, subject to certain items which vPost will never ever ship to you, for example, components to build a nuclear device  :P

Disclaimer: I am not being paid a commission, monetary or otherwise, by any party to promote this service.  Nor have I used it before, although there is no reason not to trust Singapore Post, which operates the service.  At least it is not being operated by Pos Malaysia.

Perhaps as a token of appreciation to me for making you aware of this, you can help me bring in one unit as well?  For buddy buddy sakes?  :P  That way we can share shipping costs.  It’ll be almost heavenly if you “know someone” in  Customs and SIRIM who can expedite the delivery of said items as well  :P

There you go, then.  Press those “order” buttons NOW!!!

It’s The Malaysian iPad, Yo!

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

We Malaysians love publicity.  Especially the cheap kind.  Doesn’t matter if the world laughs at us, but we just gotta have it.  And why let Apple have all the fun and headlines with something that doesn’t even deliver the “full web experience” eh?  So, we have the Ezy Tablet PC.  It’s a 10 incher, sporting an Intel Atom processor (rather tragically, it’s an Atom N270).  Capacitive touchscreen.  Runs err…jack.  As in “jack schitt”.  ”Built in 2100mAh battery with 3.5 working hours lasting.”(geez, sounds like something someone from China would write!).  Oh, and yes – “WCDMATD-SCDMACDMA2000″ – that gobbledegook means that it’s got a WWAN chip inside (aka “3G”) capable of supporting, oh, I honestly don’t know what frequencies!

Yours for US$679, or RM 2,266.  Less if you buy in bulk.  You’d better buy one first to make sure it works, just in case.  You don’t want the battery to fall off when booting it up or something.  Or God forbid, the entire thing spontaneously combusts during Linux startup.  And seriously, what’s up with that badly Photoshopped image of the illustration of multi-touch support?

There you go.  Buy one, and have bragging rights over the Apple fanboys that you managed to snag a modern working(?) tablet before them.  Just make sure you wear a flame retardant outfit when using it.  Just in case, ya know?

How Soon Can Malaysia Expect The iPad?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I’m afraid the answer is “not anytime soon”.  I am basing this on the fact that the Malaysia website still does not have a dedicated page for the iPad.  Instead, when clicking on the iPad icon in the Apple Malaysia Store, one is directed to the generic Asia iPad page.  When I checked, countries such as Australia (where the iPad is confirmed to be arriving in “late April” as per Apple’s latest iPad press release), Hongkong and Singapore all had their own dedicated iPad pages.  However, both the Singapore and Hongkong pages do not have an estimated shipping date.

Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand users are re-directed to the generic Asia iPad page.  So, this tells me that the iPad is not arriving before the end of April.  If you want one badly, it looks like you’ll have to pay some exhorbitant prices to get one, either from the US (if you’re really desperate!) or Australia (if you’re not *that* desperate).

Sigh.

10 Things Apple Needs To Fix Before Releasing The iPad

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

The eWeek website recently penned a pieced titled the above – what Apple needs to do before unleashing the iPad on to the public.  I feel that it misses the point entirely, and thank goodness that Apple doesn’t take advice from them regarding product features and launches!  I say that because they’ve practically thrown the kitchen sink at the iPad in terms of those features which they think are important but which are missing from the iPad.  The short of it is, the iPad is what Apple thinks it should be, and not what people like eWeek think it should be – after all, it’s a gamble to introduce any new product into the market, and in this case, this is what Apple thinks the buying public wants.

The usual suspects such as the lack of Flash support is there.  So is running iPhone apps on the iPad without modification, which does not take advantage of the iPad’s screen size and resolution.  There are others too, such as the pricing of 3G plans for the 3G version, etc.  Even the lack of a USB port is something that needs to be fixed.  And if Apple fixes all these, it will look like the HP Slate.  Maybe.  And then how is Apple going to differentiate itself from the “me-toos” out there?  As I’ve always told people – you know what a device does, and what it doesn’t do – if you don’t like it, don’t buy it, it’s a free world.  Just like no one can force you into marrying someone you despise (unless there’s a lot of money in it :P ).  And whining about it won’t change the situation.  Just buy another product instead!

They must be running out of things to write on that website!

The ITG xpPhone Saga Continues

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I was just sent a link to images taken by ITG, the company that manufactures (and hopefully, sells them soon!) the xpPhone which runs an embedded version of Windows XP into a phone form factor, during a recent trade show in China.  Check out the images below – nothing new that we haven’t seen before, but since it’s a slow tech news day (and week) for Malaysia, why not enjoy this while having your daily cuppa?

If you want to see more (trust me, they’re not that exciting), click here.  Now if only ITG will ship the thing, and sell it in Malaysia!
