Queue Madness Number 3

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Here comes another reason to queue up.  This time, it’s from Sony (again, after the queue for the SonyEricsson Satio, Aino and Yari late last year).  Tomorrow, from 10am onwards at 1-Utama, Sony Malaysia, in conjunction with FM988 will be organising a fight-to-the-death queue for 20 lucky (or unlucky, if you have to queue up from tonight!) customers to enjoy discounts of various amounts to buy the new bloggie™ pocket video camcorder.  First three in queue get to buy it at RM 199, instead of the usual retail price of RM 899, a whopping RM 700 discount.  And so on and so forth – you get the idea.

I think RM 700 savings is worth sacrificing a night’s worth of love with the other half, but depending on the intensity of your sessions, you may not think so.  But at least you know there’s something worth queueing up for, if you happen to be one of the first three.  The next 17 don’t do too badly either, they still enjoy a RM 400 discount, and you can walk away boasting that you are the first in Malaysia to own the bloggie™ camcorder – just don’t forget to come back and share the video that you shot using your newly purchased toy, ‘k?  ;-)

Source.  And I just realised that this is the third piece of Sony Malaysia news I’ve posted today, and no, in case you’re wondering, they don’t pay me anything to do it.  Which is a great big feckin’ pity.

Would I get one?  Yes, if I didn’t have an existing HD pocket camcorder already.  Why?  Well, this time, Sony has seen it fit to support other memory card formats rather than the lame and unusable-in-other-devices Memory Stick crap.  It supports SDHC cards.  It has image stabilisation.  It can take still pictures up to 5 megapixels in resolution.  It comes with a 4GB memory stick, better than nothing.  It records at up to 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second – not that this is going to be tremendously useful for the lay person, for two reasons: one – file sizes are just going to be so huge that you’ll cry at having to buy blank DVDs, or worse, DVD dual layer discs.  Second – try uploading a 50MB file to YouTube on our broadband connection and you’ll soon be wanting to jump off the highest building to you to put yourself out of the misery.

The not-so-good?  No HDMI out.  The quality using that lame AV out will look horrendous on that brand spanking new RM 15,000 LED TV of yours.  So, be warned.

If you get one after it’s available, do try to come back and share with us some of your Steven Speilberg rivalling videos, ‘k?  ;-)

Sony Introduces The bloggie™

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Now that almost everyone knows about YouTube, even senior citizens, it’s time to share your lousiest creations with the world.  That is, if you have enough patience waiting for the video to upload to YouTube using our extremely poor upload speeds here in Malaysia, but that’s a story for another day.  Sony recently introduced what it calls the bloggie – this is a portable camcorder/videocam that records video clips and allows the user to easily upload them to a video sharing site such as YouTube.  It’s not formally launched yet in Malaysia, so no official pricing is available, but it is already up on Sony Asia Pacific’s website.  The name probably is a play on the word “blog” and is likely targeted at those who share a lot of videos on their blogs.

There are a couple of models available, with all models being able to shoot in “full HD”, ie. 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, only useful if you own an LCD or plasma TV capable of driving such a resolution.  The lens can be swivelled quite a lot, so you can take self-portraits (self-videos?) for those who are narcissistic.  Beware though – even when you shoot in 1280 x 720 pixel resolution at 30 frames per second, those videos are going to be huge, and it is therefore nice that you can also shoot in 640 x 480 pixel resolution for a faster upload to YouTube.

If we go by the pricing in Thailand, which is having some special launching promotion, the starting price should be around RM 799, which is very affordable.  Assuming that is, that our beloved government does not take too much of a “cut” in terms of “taxes”.  Of course, being a Sony, the only thing I didn’t like about this device was that it uses the highly proprietary and basically largely useless Memory Stick Pro Duo format as its storage media.  ’nuff said.

Olympus E-P2 “Pen” Available In Malaysia In December

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

olympus logoI know there are some pro and budding photographers amongst the readers of this website, so if you’ve been itching to know when, and for how much, the new Olympus E-P2, the follow up to the highly successful E-P1 is going to be available in Malaysia, I have the answer – December.  At a price of RM 3,999 for the E-P2 with electronic viewfinder and a 14-42mm lens.  Or, for the same price, you can also get the E-P2 with the electronic viewfinder, but with a 17mm lens.  Unfortunately, no combo package for both lenses.  Which is kind of strange.  But then again, I’m no photographer – I wouldn’t even know the difference between an SLR, dSLR, point-and-shoot and Lomo even if one hit me right on my behind  :D

So, save up your money now to get one when it’s available next month!

JVC Picsio Now Available In Malaysia

Monday, October 26th, 2009

jvc logoAs I mentioned in this post, the JVC Picsio, aka model number GC-FM1, is coming to Malaysia, and it indeed has.  The recommended retail price is RM 1,099, with a free 4Gb SD card, as well as a screen protector.  The Picsio is available in black and blue colours only.  It is different from the other pocket sized high definition camcorders out there on the market today, because it has:

  1. image stabilisation – extremely useful when you are filming while on the move; it helps to prevent motion sickness in your viewers.
  2. full, ie. “true” high definition video recording at 1440 x 1080 pixels, at 30 frames per second.
  3. still image capture capability at 8 megapixels.

Somebody buy one and do a review for us poor folks?  :D
