Tune Talk Captures 500,000th Customer

Talk about a fast growth in an already saturated market – Tune Talk hit its 500,000th subscriber today, barely 6 months into its operations.  I guess there is a real market for prepaid mobile telephony services after all, probably bigger than we imagined.  And they claim to be on track for their 1,000,000th subscriber very soon.  Here’s the press release that does all the talking:

*PETALING JAYA, 10 February 2010 *– Tune Talk, the country’s newest mobile service provider has become the fastest growing telco in Malaysia when it breached the 500,000-subscriber mark in just about 5 months since its launch
in August 2009.

“With such a simple yet exciting product, we are very confident that we are on track to surpass our 1 million-subscriber target within the first year of operation. We will achieve this via boosting our distribution channels
supported by innovative marketing and communications strategies including our exciting web-based approach,” said Tune Talk CEO Jason Lo.

According to Lo, to support Tune Talk’s expansion, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has granted it a new numbering block consisting of 500,000 numbers with number series 010-770 0000 – 010-819 9999. Tune Talk’s earlier numbers ranged from 010-5000000 up to 010-5499999.* *

Tune Talk celebrated with its lucky 500,000th subscriber here today. Zolkefley Mohd Mokhtar of Negeri Sembilan was rewarded with 3D/2N all-expense paid trip to Bali, free surfing lessons together with a surfboard and a camera.

“Year 2010 will be a very exciting one for us. Starting off with a basic service comprising only voice and text messaging, we have since added other facilities like roaming and GPRS data service. And there are more cool things coming in the next few months as subscribers tell us they want and we listen, so great MMS content, caller ringback tones, cool events and more are all underway. Our roaming services are excellent and we currently cover all regional countries, plus China, Australia, UK and so on,” added Lo.

From today, Tune Talk is also introducing a new rebate plan where subscribers will be enjoying instant free talktime every time they top up RM30, RM50 or RM100. Under the Super Rebate plan, those who reload RM30 will get additional RM3 airtime for free, RM50 top-up get RM5 free airtime and RM100 will get RM10 free talktime.

“This is our way of saying thank you to our loyal subscribers without whom Tune Talk may not have attained this very encouraging achievement. We have also run a promotion for our flight voucher rewards which gives a weekly winner RM10,000 worth of AirAsia E-Gift Vouchers that can be redeemed for any AirAsia or AirAsia X flights,” Lo said.

“Tune Talk is the only mobile service that gives benefits and privileges to subscribers the moment they activate their number, and not only on your birthday or anniversary. New subscribers tell us that they can really feel the savings on mobile bills. At the end of the day we aim to make it cheaper and simpler to talk and it appears we are achieving that. We congratulate our 500,000th winner, we look forward to our 1,000,000th and are sure that each day we are working hard to give a better experience with our service because we listen to our customers all the time,” he added.

Tune Talk is the only mobile service provider that rewards its subscribers with free personal accident insurance coverage worth RM100,000. With IDD rates around 10%-30% cheaper than other operators, Tune Talk is also popular amongst migrant workers and parents of students studying abroad.

Tune Talk’s commercial service was launched on 19 August 2009, offering the lowest flat rate in the country of 22 sen per minute for voice calls and 5 sen per SMS.

Operating as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on Celcom (Malaysia) Berhad’s 2.5G network, Tune Talk offers a no-frills voice and short messaging service (SMS) package that meets the consumers’ demand for a simple, value-for-money product with easy accessibility and widest distribution reach.

Tune Talk starter SIM pack retails at RM5 and comes preloaded with RM5 worth of talk time. It is now also available on selected Kuala Lumpur-bound international AirAsia flights. Subscribers can reload via e-Pay and purchase reload vouchers at over 10,000 dealers nationwide.
