Now, now, don’t go having dirty thoughts now, especially so close to the Chinese New Year! This is the new ultra-sharp computer monitor from Dell, all 27 inches of it, in a stunningly high resolution. And I thought my existing 24 incher from Dell at a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels was plenty enough, but obviously Dell doesn’t agree with me.
So, the U2711 Ultrasharp monitor from Dell sports a resolution of 2560 x 1440, otherwise known as “WQHD” for those in the know. It comes packed with all the latest features you would expect in a computer monitor:
- High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
- 2 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
- DisplayPort (DP)
- Video Graphics Array (VGA)
- Component Video
- Composite Video
- 1 USB 2.0 upstream port
- 4 USB 2.0 downstream ports
- 8 in 1 Media reader
- DC power connector for Dell Soundbar
And hey, it’s got that new IPS technology – the same that will be used in Apple’s new iPad!
The only scary thing is the price - RM 2,899 – but I guess for such a high resolution as this, one would be willing to pay the price. As to the target market for this thing, I would hazard a guess that it will only appeal to the creative folks – Photoshoppers and video editors? Or are there any other uses for it? I certainly wouldn’t be buying one to hook it up to my netbook, which already struggles with pumping out 1920 x 1080 pixels of resolution to my existing monitor! Imagine how slow my entire system would be if it had to pump out WQHD resolution (assuming it can even do this!).

WAW , is almost RM3k , now common price and size for lcd/led screen should be 24inch , is about RM700….

@Andy, yep, that’s why unless it’s a full HD LCD TV, a computer monitor will always be better than an LCD TV for hooking up to a PC/notebook…

@Alvin, at this price, I certainly hope so! Few months? There will be a bigger and better model already!

the major difference between full HD display and this is the resolution:
1920×1080 compare to 2560×1440, that’s why price higher

@JJ, I very much doubt that a TV can perform better than a dedicated computer monitor, no matter the size nor resolution…have you tried hooking up a computer to a large LCD TV?

ya sure but as u said, its kinda blur..pixels and resolutions r completely diff from my monitor thus, not sharp enuff

@JJ, that’s why not many would want to use their LCD TVs as a computer monitor – the screen may be large, but on closer inspection, it is not as sharp as dedicated monitors.

what is good about a tv is it can be remotely controlled by remote control and has built in speakers. most LCD monitor do not have support remote control, although some has built in speakers like the soundbar

@David, some higher end monitors do have speakers. And for a computer monitor, why would you want to have remote control when you are practically sitting right in front of the monitor? Also, why is there a need to remote control a computer monitor?
[Reply]
but seriously, who would be their target buyers apart from a remisier or commodities traders ?? a 27″…gosh! i need a remote keyboard remote mouse to sit about 5 feets away so that i can still comfortably use this monitor !!

@No2, if you sit 5 feet away, you can’t read the text liao!

the remote control is to switch the video input and adjust the volume, useful especially you have multiple video input. my 24″ LCD accepts VGA and component input (wii). I would like to switch the input from a far distance

for 2800 or so, why not get a 32″ LCD TV which you can also hook up to your computer? Any advantage of this monitor over a LCD TV?

@No2, it’s got a much higher resolution than a normal full HD TV which maxes out at 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution…
