Some Pictures From The HTC Touch2 Offer Event

htc-logoI posted about a special offer from HTC for three days, beginning today (9th October), at 10am to Sunday 10pm, where a total of 65 units of the Touch2 smartphone which comes with Windows Mobile 6.5 is going to be on sale daily at a steep discount of 65% off its retail price.  As the retail price of the Touch2 is RM 1,599, this means that you can buy the Touch2 at RM 559.65.  And as I tweeted, one would be either stupid or silly, or heaven forbid, both, to miss an offer like this.  And since I do not like to call myself either, I decided to head on down to Sunway Pyramid to perhaps get a few to make some money.  I kid, of course.

So, imagine my horror when I got there at 945am, only to see that there were already more than 80-90 people in the queue in front of me.  Here are some pictures I took with my iPhone on the length of the queue when I got there.

crazy htc touch2 promo queue 1 crazy htc touch2 promo queue 2

So, here’s my advice if you really want to buy one:

  1. head on down there tomorrow or Sunday.  Plan to reach there at 6am or earlier.  You won’t probably get in, but I think you can queue up at the door right next to where they are holding the event on the “Blue Atrium” of Sunway Pyramid.  Why 6am?  The people in the queue were already starting to queue at this time, and today is a Friday, a working day.  So imagine what one has to do when it is a weekend?
  2. bring a foldable chair or something if you value your back.  Standing in line for more than 4 hours to enjoy a RM 1,000 discount is no fun.
  3. bring lots of patience.  When I left at 1115am just now, the queue was still there, the sale of the Touch2 had not started yet.  It was quite a disaster really.  There were a number of frustrated looking faces in the queue.
  4. try to insist on a queue number from the organiser.  You know the typical Malaysian style when there’s an opportunity to make easy money – people will cheat, lie, cut queue, murder, maim, etc to get what they want.
  5. only one unit per person.  If you want 20 units, bring along 19 other friends with you to queue up.

Drop a comment here if you manage to get your grubby hands on a unit!

Does look like it has become another early morning $$$ grab to make a quick buck and nothing to do with the “fantastic” phone.

@toni, Malaysians are very good at teasing, but when it comes to actual thinking, very poor. That’s why all our best brains are overseas. Events and promos like this are never managed properly. When I left at 1115 the sales for the Touch2 hadn’t even started yet, and some had been queueing up since 6am!

are u sure RM1599 is the suggested retail price?

i’m more inclined to believe that a new WM 6.5 PDA phone with HSDPA would cost more than RM2000, maybe close to RM3000 or even more…

perhaps RM1599 is the price AFTER 65% discount…

I went there to check out the place, just now.The main entrance leading to the HTC selling booth is in between J.co Donut and Tokyo G. So there’s no other alternative entrance to go in there except this one.If you miss it,theres’ gone,is your queue.I have spoken to one of the security personnel, and it is confirmed, that there will only be one entrance going in,just for this selling event.Another tip guys, the security personnel also said once 65 people has reach the mark…they are allowed to go in,leading to the booth and form a straight queue line. From there on,you’ll be given a ticket number and wait wait wait. While the remaining people, they can’t come in to queue anymore. No point queuing it anymore and can go back home or wait for the last selling day.So my point is,the earlier you queue, the better is your chance. This is no joke people, imagine hundreds of people are going after this offer, while only 65 lucky people are able to grab it.Don’t slack even a bit, there’s no one to blame except us…..See ya all there, good luck on grabbing one!!!!

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ridzuan, congratulations! What time did you complete the purchase? When I left at 11+ the process hadn’t even started yet. You must have spent at least 6 hours in the queue? I hope you enjoy the phone!

    [Reply]

    Ridzuan Reply:

I did enjoy the phone but I discovered a minor bug on the phone. Sunday I’m going there to complaint. If you enable Owner Info to display, when you unlock it, it hangs. You cannot do anything to unlock except plugging out the battery. Bummer!! However, if they say refund – I will say, I’ll wait for the patch :) Too good to let go!!!

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ridzuan, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. How did you find this site, out of curiosity? :D

With every new Windows Mobile release, there’s bound to be some bugs. As long as they don’t stop you from using the phone, at this price, it’s worth bearing it until the next firmware upgrade/patch. By Owner Info, do you mean the built in program or a third party program?

Dude, I am the first one to purchase on Friday morning laa :) The guy wearing yellow shirt right in front is me. When I purchase the phone I got at least 20+ eyes looking at me. There was also some minor pricing dispute after that but I snuck out quietly after that… They said pay mandatory RM140 for additional 1yr warranty and bluetooth headset and another mandatory RM120 for 4GB memory card and another optional RM80 for software installation. But after some heat, they finally offer the original price!

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ridzuan, good for you for standing your ground. Wave the brochure around if they insist, eh? And that is certainly (typical) crooked Malaysian business practice. Perhaps you want to share the name of the retailer with us here? ;-)

@Jack, wow, I can’t keep up with all these comments! Leave my site for 8 hours, come back, and wow, it exploded!

You know what – these guys know there’s an easy chance to make money. Why didn’t someone approach someone near the front of the line, offer RM 300 for that person to bugger off and sell you his place in the line? Anyone think of that? ;-)

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Gsl, they can make a lot more money buying it themselves and selling it off 5 minutes after they get it. People are not stupid nowadays la. Maybe you can get a beggar to do it, but students? Nah, I don’t think so…

  21. Jack Lee says:

Bloody hell, I arrived there at about 5:20 am. Parked at the basement car park… hurrah, lift allows access in.

Made my way the Blue Atrium. Eh? I was the only one inside there! Hurrah! Then I saw lots and lots of people outside at the main entrance already queuing up but the glass doors were locked and they couldn’t get in. So I lepaked on some chairs around the roadshow area, thinking to myself, those fellas, why dun they just come in through the freakin’ basement carpark? I was feeling pretty smug and lucky at that point in time! heh heh heh!

However, I was shot down and brought down to earth shortly after. Some guards came over and told me I have to go outside and wait with the rest… kena shooed! But the guards were very polite though. They said they can’t allow me to wait inside as the rest outside sure complain kaw kaw and they told me people started waiting from 1:30am!!! One guard told me, “Eh, why dun you come back tonight to try your luck?”. I was like… wtf…. and all I could do was laugh and go quietly outside. Really “potong stim” la! LOL!

By that time, easily about 80 people outside in a queue already…. I was like, bloody hell, should have continued my beauty sleep. But I decided to wait awhile in any event, hoping against hope that some of the gals or guys there are only there to accompany their respective friends, boyfriends or galfriends and not there to actually buy a phone too! Hahaha! Talk about lying to myself! LOL!

ONLY to find out 2 hours later that some of those boys and girls decided to take things into their own hands much earlier on, to manage things a little due to lots of people jumping queue (typical Malaysians).

They had decided to do up a list of names and IC numbers of people who were there first and they had already listed 77 people. And there were lots of other people there whose names were not in the list. The list would later be handed to the retailer to see what could be done. I asked the “organiser” of the list at what time they started to take down names and he told me they started at about 2-3 am! Siao! One guy said he came at 3 am and he was already number 65! Wtf man!

Overall, it looked there were a lot of teens or students there… not surprising due to the college(s) and unis nearby. Aren’t these students suppose to stay in and study and do assignments, or something? Not go to queue up at 1:30 am for phones! Hahahahaa!

I left soon after I found out about the list. On my way home, I was thinking to myself, “How to “fight” with all these young kids to get the phone la! Aiyoyo.. sigh.. old liao, cannot “fight” liao…” LOL! But they truly deserved to get the phone if they have been there since 1 or 2 am!

I didn’t take any pics as I wasn’t really in the mood liao…hahaha! I was snapping some pics while I was inside, pics of the oh, so beautifully empty area, devoid of people except me! But I dun think those pics are relevant now… kah kah kah! I tried to snap a pic while outside but with me just having a camphone and it being still dark outside at that point in time…. I won’t bother submitting the pic, DAD. When it was lighter, I no mood liao, just wanna go home! LOL!

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Jack, I actually told andy to forget it. If you think you’re early, there is bound to be 65 other people in front of you who are earlier! But I guess one has to experience it to feel the occasion. I’m just wondering if this time HTC has managed to piss off more people than they have made happy? Perhaps next time they should have a tiered pricing system with more units for sale. Example – first 65, get 65% off. Next 50, 50%. Next 25, 25% off. Last 10, 10% off. More motivation to queue up this way, and keeps more people happy.

This is an easy way to make an instant RM 1,000 or so profit. Imagine – buy the phone at RM 560, sell it immediately for RM 1,599. Who doesn’t want to do it for a few hours work in the dead of night when these students aren’t even sleeping anyway? RM 1,000 goes a long way in KL, you know. Tax free. No need to report income to gomen.
