HTC HD2 Shipping SIM Free In UK November 11th

htc-logoUK retailer Clove mentioned on their blog that the unlocked version of the new HTC HD2 aka Leo, will be available from November 11th onwards, barring any “unforeseen circumstances” (a standard “CYA” in case they can’t make the deadline!).  The price?  A princely £469 (£539.35 inc VAT) before UK taxes, aka VAT.  This translates to approximately RM 2,529.  Damn.  That’s cheap.  I’d get one myself if this was the approximate price.  Personally, I think that if the local HTC outfit can price this at around RM 2,799 or lower, it can take away some of the interest surrounding the iPhone3GS, as well as the top end Symbian touch smartphones from the other major manufacturers.

According to Clove, this is what’s in the retail box that they are selling:

What’s in the box of HTC HD2?

  • HTC HD2
  • Battery
  • UK AC Adapter
  • USB Cable
  • Case
  • 2GB MicroSD Memory Card
  • Stereo Headset
  • Documentation

Agree. If it’s below Rm2,799 I might get one. But…. HTC Dragon with Android I prefer the most. Wahaha

@Hawke, I like HTC’s product naming. Very nice. Instead of using model numbers which people can’t remember, we have names like the HD2 and the Dragon. Dunno about other people, but my ageing brains can’t store that much information nowadays, and every little bit to make memorisation easier helps!

@andy, this is a nice phone indeed. But whether it will measure up to the iPhone or not depends on user requirements. People choose different platforms for different reasons. I chose the iPhone platform because it was the best platform for my needs and requirements. Since no two people are the same, we all carry different phones la. Just like someone’s wife may not be suitable for you (except maybe if it’s Megan Fox la…).

I reserve judgement until I have managed to play with this phone. Yes, the things you mention are the HD2′s selling points. I have used many touchscreen phones before, and I have to say that very few measure up the iPhone’s smoothness.

WinMo has its own applications, so does the iPhone. WinMo is an old platform, so you don’t have to worry about finding an application to meet your needs.

i think iphone 3G still considerable to buy , although is not new the market.

but i really like the 4.3 huge screen…..
and worry on the resell value of htc phone…..

iphone is still the best resell value…..
unlike is htc leo is a brand new model and waiting to sell….on market

@andy, life is not perfect la, so you just have to choose one that fits your requirements and worry about the rest later. No use buying a phone with a high resale value that you don’t find useful at all, right? ;-)

htc dare to sell high,in order to beat iphone and recover his financial bad result, htc just have to do is sales and sales , mean cheaper and affordable.
    like ACER…..

i guess the price is same as iphone or cheaper by RM99,ehehehe

for the pricing,is very subject to policy and other factor, logistic is one of it,as we know DELL is selling cheaper in malaysia, compare to singapore ,taiwan , and other place , i dont know why…
like the dell 11z base on the spec and pricing same as usa ( i can say cheaper in the word for IT stuff )
dell 11z taiwan selling RM3000,almost double our pricing….

IMHO, cheapest would be RM2,999 or RM2,888! Lets have a contest, the one who guesses the closest price wins a free HD2? LOL!

For me, I am just wondering whether this device would actually be TOO big for the average Asian hands? Too big in the sense of using it one handed comfortably. My Ominia II with the 3.7 inch screen is already close to the limit for my hand.

Most importantly, 1320mah battery is really kecik. Summore with a monster phone like this! How long can it last on a single charge in the real world?

    andy Reply:

for 4.3 htc leo screen side , look like increasing of the length not high…..

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@andy, screen size is measured from one corner to opposite diagonal corner.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Jack, ya, let’s. You sponsor the prize, OK? Muahahahaha!!!

Yes, the 4.3 inch screen in a device could prove to be a bit unwieldy. You can’t escape from that. Putting it in a jeans pocket will be next to impossible, unless you’re wearing one of those jeans which can stuff around 6 Coke bottles at the sides.

And as for the other questions, if I’m ever fortunate enough to get a review unit, I may even organise a session where interested readers can meet up to fondle molest play with the unit.

@D.A.D,if you so happen to get a unit, count me in,ya.Would love to compare the performance and screen quality with Omnia II.Capacitive screen VS AMoled.Which is better in terms of clarity and brightness?Guess, have to wait and see.

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ken77, sure, I will let everyone know in advance so that those who are interested can make the necessary arrangements to turn up. It’ll likely be in the Sri Hartamas/Bangsar/Damansara Heights area, as I have a problem with driving in traffic! :P

    [Reply]

    Ken77 Reply:

@D.A.D,thanks.HeHe,any area is fine for me,i love driving!.D.A.D,do you think this phone has a dedicated graphics processor as i can’t find elsewhere for answer. If it does have one,do you think it is powerful enough to playback HD videos on it?In my opinion,i think 1.0Ghz CPU+GPU can render 720p smoothly, just like the i8910.
This phone is definitely worth buying and it’s a huge bonus if it can playback High Definition videos on it’s huge 4.3″size screen.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ken77, I think a dedicated GPU in a mobile device is unnecessary because of the hit on battery life. Plus, what apps could possibly need a dedicated GPU? A 1GHz processor should be fast enough to handle the most demanding of mobile graphics requirements nowadays, I think. Even on the iPhone3GS, it’s already pretty good performance, at least to me!

I don’t know about rendering HD videos on other devices other than the i8910 HD. When you try to play videos with resolutions not supported by the phone, most phones will simply not play them. Why on earth would you want to play, for example, 1280 x 720 pixel video on a 4.3 inch 800 x 480 screen? Firstly, the file size would be atrocious; secondly, because of the size of the screen, there will not be any noticeable difference between an HD and non-HD video; and finally, unless you rip these HD movies yourself, you will not find many of them on the net, and even if you do, I hope you’ve got a really fat pipe to pull them down! Not that I want to discourage you or anything, but I’m just saying, ya’ know… :D

    [Reply]

    Ken77 Reply:

@D.A.D,HeHe!yeah i know it’s too much ask. It’s just that since HTC is naming this phone as HD2,so perhaps it could be associated with some form of HD playback or recording.I know we don’t need it by today’s standard, but somehow if we want it,we can use it.I’m really nutz over display and resolution. That’s why,i always emphasized on HD’s.I believe with the higher density resolution (in PPi)and the smaller the dot pitch a screen has,the clearer and sharper the display will be.It will make a difference even on a small display.I know one day,the phone’s resolution will go up to SXGA or UXGA standard.Who knows, ya’ know…………

@Jack, just to be sure – it’s fondling the phone, not me, OK? Muahahahahaha!!!

    [Reply]

    Ken77 Reply:

@Jack,i’m afraid you have a point there about the battery consumption.I still think HTC should upgrade the battery, because of the screen size, higher Mhz and running on capacitive input.Even Omnia II which is running on AmOLED came with the 1500MaH.Perhaps there is an option to buy a higher grade battery to compensate the original one.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ken, I believe the extended battery will be an option. And the battery cover will have to come with the battery as well, because for sure it will protrude from the back of the unit.

    [Reply]

    Ken77 Reply:

@D.A.D,that would make the phone look even bulkier and ugly.HTC should just make, the optional battery looks like the same size as the original, but only increase the MaH capacity on it.I believe it’s possible, because i’ve come across seeing those AA rechargeable batteries, where the sizes are standard, only the capacity is different.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Ken77, sadly, as I understand it, mobile phone batteries don’t “work” the same way as ordinary batteries. Check out this extended battery for the T-Mobile G1, aka HTC Dream – it has to come with a special battery door to accommodate it! -> http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/bacy26tmg1-bk.htm

Also, if you check online for extended batteries for netbooks, the high capacity ones will “protrude” outwards – either towards the back or downwards.

    Ken77 Reply:

Thanks for the link. Now i understand it.Protruded batteries is not everyone’s cup of tea.At least not for me, it looks horrible.HeHe.

@Ian Ng, I would say that without having either of these phones in my hands right now, the HD2 wins. Hands down.

  7. Ian Ng says:

well, HD2 looks good in terms of specs, but in the long run, there are some things in come into mind:

    - will it support winmo7? so far, there is no clear “yes”, so just have to assume otherwise. it might the case within half a year of the HD2 available in the market, other phones which are confirmed to be capable of winmo7 will be out there (with winmo6.5 initially of course, but able to upgrade later).

    - hows the battery life to support its vast functions? earlier someone mentioned omnia2 with amoled and 1500mah battery. undoubtly that combination, with the slight smaller screen gives a good per charge run for the phone. no point having a ‘superphone’ but that battery gives out in early evenings.
