Dell Launches The 11z Netbook Stealthily In Malaysia (As Usual…)

dell-logoWeeks (or has it been months?) after its availability in the US, the Dell Inspiron 11z is now available for purchase in Malaysia.  And the price?  Well, let’s just say it’s very competitive, given Dell’s branding and its reputation for solidly manufactured products and after sales service.

dell inspiron 11z (1) dell inspiron 11z (2)

Two models are available – the single core Celeron, as well as the dual core Celeron.  Needless to say, if you need the performance and/or can afford it, my advice is to get the dual core version – it’s only RM 450 more.  The Dell (TM) Inspiron 11z (S510906MY) model has the following specifications (emphasis mine) for RM 1,749 (told you it was cheap!).  It’s a pity that other colours, apart from the standard black, costs RM 70 extra, for the Cherry Red and Alpine White.

  • Genuine Windows Vista(R) Home Basic 32 bit SP1 Edition (English)
  • Intel Celeron Single Core 743 (1.3GHz / 800MHz FSB / 1MB)
  • 1 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis
  • McAfee(R) Security Center(TM) (30 days Trial Version)
  • 11.6 ” High Definition WLED (1366×768) Display with TrueLife(TM)
  • 2GB (1 X 2GB) DDR2 SDRAM
  • 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X4500MHD
  • Integrated Stereo Sound
  • 6-cell Primary Battery
  • 65W AC Adapter
  • Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g Half Mini Card
  • Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth
  • Dell(TM) Keyboard with Touchpad
  • Obsidian Black

The bad news?  It only comes with Windows Vista Home Basic – not upradeable for free to Windows 7.  Great pity indeed.  But you can pay an additional RM 116 to get it upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 though – just make sure you check with Dell Malaysia that this qualifies for free Windows 7 upgrade when 7 is released come October 22nd.

The dual core model, Dell (TM) Inspiron 11z Laptop (S510907MY), costs RM 2,199 and has the following specifications (emphasis mine).  As usual, colours apart from the standard black cost RM 70 extra – in this case, Cherry Red and Alpine Red is again available, as with the single core version above.

  • Genuine Windows Vista(R) Home Premium 32 bit SP1 Edition (English)
  • Intel Pentium Dual Core SU 4100 (1.3GHz / 800MHz FSB / 2MB)
  • 1 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis
  • McAfee(TM) Security Center (Multi-Language) – 15 Months Version
  • 11.6 ” High Definition WLED (1366×768) Display with TrueLife(TM)
  • 2GB (1 X 2GB) DDR2 SDRAM
  • 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator X4500MHD
  • Integrated Stereo Sound
  • 6-cell Primary Battery
  • 65W AC Adapter
  • Dell Wireless 1397 802.11b/g Half Mini Card
  • Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth
  • Dell(TM) Keyboard with Touchpad
  • Obsidian Black

2Gb of RAM for both models, as well as the 6 cell battery, are always welcome!  At the prices, I think Asus and Acer can kiss goodbye to sales of their eeePC 1101 and Aspire One 751 models respectively, as both are now considered quite lame, hardware specifications wise, compared to the Dell 11z.  So, are you going to get one?  I’m excited, but broke.  So, let’s hope Dell is kind enough to provide me a loaner review unit.  Hopefully a long term loaner.  Hopefully.  Hint hint.

Is this Celeron chip the same as the CULV to be found in the (long awaited) Acer 1810?

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Alex, the 1810 uses the 1.4GHz SU3500 processor I believe, while the lower end 11z uses the 1.3GHz 743 processor, lower clockspeed, so they are different processors. To tell you honestly, I don’t know the difference in performance between the newer Celerons and the single core SU series. Maybe we can surf over to this site to check…

Alex, if u want to know how the SU 3500, SU 4100 and celeron 743 were rank between each other, refer to this site >>>> http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

Almost all CULV processors have been listed there…

No free upgrade to win 7 ? Then wait till 22nd October. By November hopefully all laptop comes with win 7 preinstall. With these low-clock-speed-processor-for-longer-battery-runtime, I’m sure u don’t want to burden your laptop with vista!

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@artic, I’m not sure, we’ll have to check with the local Dell outfit to confirm. In the US, the dual core does come with free upgradeability rights though.

2Gb ram running in vista is consider compatible only.

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@fook, in my personal experience, running Vista with 2Gb DDR3 RAM, and the CULV dual core processor, specifically SU9400, is quite fast. So, with Windows 7, it’s going to be even faster!

wait for dell year end sales , may be can get cheaper price , which i guess…
if this unit is comparable with acer 1810 and sony TT , i may consider.
but i am not sure , is it 3G embelled ?

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@andy, by the year end, there will be newer models to tempt us, such is life. So then the wait continues. Just like buying smartphones

No, none of the 11z models come with embedded 3G/WWAN. Even in the US, these models are still not very popular.

The thing with manufacturers is that they seldom produce hardware which are identical to their competitors to make comparison more difficult. Very devious, eh?

@andy, thanks for the link. I’m just wondering if Malaysia will follow the same policy as the US. So, that’s why I ask people to confirm with Dell before purchase if this is important to them! ;-)

newb, its confirm by DELL Malaysia that if one purchase 11z with vista premium, he is entitle for free upgrade to win 7. I email to u.

@andy, I doubt it since it comes pre-installed with Vista. You can check the Dell US support site to see if there are XP drivers though…

Are Dell going to launch 11z with a dedicated GC? at least boost a little bit graphic performance just like acer timeline series or asus ULV series..

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@DS, I doubt it, I haven’t seen any news that they will. A dedicated GPU will add around RM 300-400 to the cost of the device, making it prohibitively expensive for a small screened netbook. After all, people would not be buying an 11 inch netbook for gaming, right?

but some teenagers will as its portable to bring around and gaming with other on the go… and i believe in future 12 inch or 13inch screen will be another trend for notebook too.. actually for dual core su4100 compare with su9400 any major different in term of processing speed?

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@DS, when the market is there, I’m sure they’ll do it later. For now, who knows? If the price of an 11″ with dedicated GPU is almost the same as that for a 14″ or 15″, which one will people buy? And portability while gaming is not important, I think. But then, I’m not a gamer, so what do I know? :P

There shouldn’t be a big difference between the SU4100 and 9400, after all, it’s only a difference of 0.1GHz in clockspeed. Sadly there isn’t yet any benchmark info for SU4100 on this website -> http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php But there is benchmark already for the SU9400 though, so take a look!

forgot to ask the battery life for 6 cell..as i saw the acer 1810t is claiming that it has 6 hours battery life with 6 cell battery..how abt 11z?

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@DS, no idea about the battery life. We’ll have to wait for exhaustive reviews for that. Manufacturers’ claimed battery life is inaccurate anyway, so don’t read too much into that…

    [Reply]

    ANDY Reply:

other site , claim dell 11z 6 cells battery last 5 hours ( cont surfing ) , is lesser than mini 10 and acer 1410 which are about 6 hour.
mini10 bcau is smaller screen , acer may be is a technology by acer can control the battery saving usage which i cant remember.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@andy, 5 hours is not too bad for an 11″ screen device. And if it’s actually productive usage, then all the better. Or is this where the user just dims the screen, then just let the computer sit there until the battery runs out?

  14. DS says:

so dell got any stock ready now? it will takes how long to ship to the buyer?

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@DS, in my experience, that’s not how Dell operates. They don’t normally keep stock. If you’re lucky, you can get it in a few days if they prioritise new products to be shipped. Best to ask them.
