Maxis Opens Pre-Booking For RIM Blackberry Curve 8520 [UPDATED]

[UPDATE] Updated with pricing information below, supplied by a commenter.
maxis-logoIn a press release today, Maxis announced that it is opening pre-bookings for the RIM (Research In Motion) Blackberry Curve 8520 beginning today until 30th September. It is also making the 8520 available to its prepaid customers, for the first time. The Curve 8520 is one of RIM’s latest Blackberries; click here for its specifications.

Note that this is only a 2.5G phone, there’s no 3G support. But that also means that its battery life should far exceed smartphones which are permanently using a 3G connection. Let’s hope Maxis can craft a really compelling deal for its prepaid Hotlink customers as I’m rather interested to check out what’s so great about the Blackberries.

If you’re interested, Celcom is also running a promotion, and pre-order, for its prepaid XPAX customers, for the same Blackberry Curve 8520! It’s nice to know that RIM decided not to go exclusive with any particular celco in Malaysia for their products – personally I think this allows them to sell more of these things, and with their push into the consumer space, is a wise move indeed.

Here’s the press release:

[UPDATE] Thanks to andy, a regular reader and hunter of information, we now know the recommended retail pricing (RRP) for the 8520 is RM 1,199.  Click here for the FAQ from Maxis on this subject.  Maxis keeps alluding to a special package pricing for the 8520 when it launches, especially for prepaid Hotlink customes, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.  Thanks, andy!

is 2.5G mean is EDGE , i feel MAXIS is weak on EDGE ( DIGI is better and wide coverage ) , for MAXIS you either can pick GPRS or 3G – HSDPA or UMTS
    dad , how u thing ?
dad if is ready for booking , do let us know.
i also waiting there is one with keypad samsung with winmob 6.5 , suggested price about RM1k ++ , any update on it ? is 3G also…

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@andy, yes, 2.5G = EDGE. So far, in my area, Maxis EDGE works fine, quite dependable.

I have registered for both the Celcom and Maxis offers. Let’s see who can offer a better package and whether I still have any money left to buy anything apart from white rice ;-(

I wonder how much the B7320 is selling at? Does anyone know?

  3. ANDY says:

the RSP is RM1199 ( http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/blackberry/curveFAQ.pdf ) , prepaid will be selling this price , may be with free bundle of the data plan like iphone.. i guess
i will go for samsung 3G winmob 6.5 with keypad similar like this BB

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@andy, thanks for the info and link! Wow, you really do a lot of digging huh? ;-) :D

The Samsung model you’re talking about is the B7320? The WinMo 6.1 standard non-touchscreen edition one?

  4. No2 says:

M’s EDGE – my experience tells me that it goes as far as to KL/PJ/Klang/Cyberjaya only… Once you get out of this area you will most probably be getting GPRS. I’m using Curve now..

Anyhow I’m not really on the speed to surf in my BB, i use the push email services so this isn’t a concern to me yet.. :)

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@No2, I agree. Apart from Celcom who needs to do “national service” by providing nationwide coverage, the others are not required to do so. Well, “not really required” may be a more accurate description :D

And EDGE for casual surfing is not bad, plus it will conserve battery life. Are you using the Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) or the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS)?

    [Reply]

  5. No2 says:

    Hi DAD,
    m using their RM40 (5mb) BIS service..

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@No2, ooo, I thought the BIS service was actually cheaper, around RM 25 or so? Hmmm…

  6. No2 says:

Hhmm…no clue where this RM25 package came from? Is it from other Telco?

    Maxis package : http://www.maxis.com.my/personal/blackberry/devices_new.asp

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@No2, sorry, I seem to recall it was RM25 for some ridiculously small amount of bandwidth but I can’t seem to find it now! Thanks for the link!

i want to ask that price of blackbery curve 8520?does it have 3g setting…

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@omar, no, the 8520 is a 2.5 only phone, ie. it supports maximum EDGE connection speeds only. I believe the postpaid pricing for the 8520 is RM 1,199. No idea on prepaid pricing yet.

    Hi..
I’m planning to work in malaysia for 3 months. Can u please advise me blackbery internet service company in malaysia where I can just buy the sim card then register BIS via sms? Please advise. Thanks.

    [Reply]

    Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@kat, my advice, because you’re only here for such a short period, is to get either the Maxis Hotlink or Celcom Xpax prepaid BIS services. For “unlimited” service, I think Celcom is a better deal, although note that WAP browsing is not included in the “unlimited” daily package, so if you surf to YouTube you will be charged extra, on a pay-as-you-use basis, whereas the more expensive Maxis Hotlink monthly unlimited package does include WAP browsing. The choice is yours.
