[UPDATE] Added link to Straits Times of Singapore website on the release date of the new iPhone3GS.
In what must surely be a sign that the launching of the iPhone3GS is very very close, Singtel, Apple’s exclusive partner for the iPhone in Singapore, has updated its iPhone microsite. As far as I can see, compared to the previous version, there are two major changes:
- the new iPhone3GS is now displayed prominently on the microsite, although interested customers/non-customers are still invited to register their interest. It was previously only mentioned in a text sentence at the bottom of the page.
- the existing 16Gb model of the iPhone3G has been sold out, which is a good sign of inventory management indeed for Singtel, because with the launch of the iPhone3GS whose capacity starts at 16Gb, there would have been too much of an overlap between the existing 3G and 3GS models.
So, what does this mean for us here? I’m personally excited because I expect to see an influx of the Singtel 3GS coming into Malaysia within the next 10-14 days. The rumoured launch is 10th July, which is next Friday, although there have been reports that Singtel has launched new major handsets on a Saturday, which would be the 11th. But hey, it’s only a one day difference! Why would one want to buy a Singtel iPhone? Apart from the fact that it is SIM free/unlocked, there is also the small matter of warranty – it’s much easier to make a trip down to Singapore to claim for warranty, compared to say, Hongkong or Australia – after all, a one way trip using Firefly from Subang to Changi’s low cost airport is only RM 88 all-in, so one can go in the morning and come back in the evening to settle any warranty matters! The only big question we have left is – how much is it going to cost?!?!!
The Singtel iPhone microsite is located here.
[UPDATE] atlee in the shoutbox alerted me to a breaking news story on the Singapore Straits Times website which states definitively that the iPhone3GS will be released next Friday. Click here for the story. Thanks, atlee!
