No redsn0w? Never Mind, There’s purplera1n!

apple_logoGot a brand spanking new iPhone3GS and crying over the fact that it cannot yet be jailbroken because the DevTeam, the team responsible so far for all the tools available to jailbreak and unlock the previous generation iPhone3G, is refusing to release the super tool codenamed ultrasn0w because they fear Apple would close the door on the “vulnerability” used to jailbreak/unlock in the upcoming OS 3.1 of the iPhone?  Well worry no more, because a man by the name of George Hotz, reputedly the first person to unlock the iPhone has released a tool, with the funky name of “purplera1n” (must be a Prince fan!) to the general public to achieve the jailbreak (sorry, no unlocking, yet).  Read all about it on his blog here.  Quoting from his blog post on the DevTeam’s refusal to release ultrasn0w until OS 3.1 is released, he says:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it’s just a matter of tools.

Get the purplera1n tool here.   Unfortunately it only runs on Windows at the moment, and there is no detailed tutorial on how or what exactly you should do to jailbreak, although some brief (very brief!) instructions are available on the website.  Perhaps someone will be kind enough to write a detailed tutorial which even an uneducated dog can follow soon!

Yay!!!

Found some interesting comments about this hack here… looks like for half of them, it was not as smooth going as they expected and some just got plain fed up!

@Jack, as I read them, I surmised that half of them are having problems because they were not using the English version of Windows, had firewalls or antivirus on which was blocking purplera1n, and the other half are simply dumb idiots who shouldn’t be doing the jailbreak in the first place! :D

Hhhhhmmm… perhaps! Hahahaha! I dun have an Iphone and of course, no experience with any jailbreaking (Iphone or otherwise). So I didn’t realise that some of them simply dun know what they are talking about!

@Jack, I will tell you whether it works for sure or not when I get mine…soon…soon…muahahahahaha…hopefully!

Anyway, the process of jailbreaking on the current 3G model is really easy, even my dog could do it. All you need is push some buttons at the right time. But having said that, my dog is a lot smarter than a lot of people I know…

@Alvin, haha, it’s raining purple! I’ll be the first to try when I get my 3GS. Pssst – call me, I may have some “lobang” for some Singtel 3GS sets.

And after jailbreaking using purplera1n, you can then use the ultrasn0w tool to unlock any 3GS! Which includes SIM locked AT&T sets from the US!

OMG OMG OMG….. if can buy from US dem bloody cheap liao.. do post your 3GS jailbreaking findings here! I may be able to get a US 3GS…

As for jailbreaking the 3G, yeah it seems quite easy. I was asked about it by my wife’s cousin (even though I dun have an Iphone – he knows I am a tech freako! haha!). After a little bit of googling, reading through a few “how to”s, I think I know how to do it even before I get hold of an Iphone!

@Jack, whoa, hold on buddy! Hahahaha…I’ve not seen you get this excited, not even when the N97 or i8910 HD was launching! Bitten by the bug?

Yes, jailbreaking the 3G is a very easy process. Even my dog could do it with one leg tied behind his back. It’s idiot proof. Note, I didn’t say moron proof and as we know there are an increasing number of them in the world, with Malaysia having our disproportionate share of them, unfortunately…

If Maxis is not going to move their ass soon on the 3GS, they are gonna lose out on a lot of sales…. just like the first time round. Hahahaha! Sor lou lah really….

@Jack, I’ve written enough on this topic already. I really feel like deja vu – that whatever happened with the 3G is going to repeat itself with the 3GS…by the time it is finally launched, not many will give a hoot because the majority of people who should be the target demographic for Maxis would already have gotten the phone elsewhere! Like me!

So, are you trading in your N97 for a 3GS then? ;-)

See whether my wifey wants one or not. Only provided if I can get one for really really cheap, like at AT&T contract prices! Haha!

Not for me lah, I still fancy my N97 and I am not out of love with it and looking for a mistress yet… LOL!

@Jack, haha, if your wifey wants one, I’m sure it won’t be long before you will switch! Resistance, as they say, is futile!
