Acer Aspire One 751 Now Available In Malaysia

acer-logoFinally, it’s here.  I’m not sure anyone cares anymore, but it’s here.  The 751 is Acer’s 11″ offering in the netbook space.  I saw it on sale in DigitalMall PJ this afternoon, and was told that the units only arrived yesterday.  Whether this is true or not, or typical Malaysian salesman talk, I’m not sure, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt.  It’s available in five colours – black, white, red, blue and the usual vomit-inducing pink.  Only the pink was on display.  I’m not sure what the deal is with pink netbooks.  They should be outlawed, but let’s keep that thought for another post.

As usual, Acer Malaysia’s website is still not updated with the availability of the 751, not that I’m surprised.  We must be the only country in the world where the poor consumer has to walk through the “shark”-infested IT shopping malls to hunt for new products.  The price?  A pleasantly surprising RM 1,699 for the “standard package”, or RM 1,799 for the “enhanced package” which consists of an upgrade to 2Gb RAM, a carrying case (the standard package only comes with a soft pouch), wired mouse, and maybe some other insignificantly valued “goodies”.  In case you’ve forgotten, here are its specifications.

Plus:

  1. 11.6″ screen.
  2. 1366 x 768 resolution.
  3. 6 cell battery.
  4. almost full sized keyboard.  It’s chiclet too!

Not good:

  1. Intel Atom Z520 processor at 1.33GHz.

That one single “not good” is enough to put me off entirely.  And it seems that only Asia has the pink version, the US and Europe apparently only have the black, white, red and blue.  This netbook, sad to say, has not received any good reviews, with most reviews criticising its lacklustre performance due to its rather lame Z series Atom processor.  And the only reason I can think of for its late arrival in Malaysia is that excess stocks are being channeled for sale here.  After those bad reviews, I’m quite sure there will be excess stock from other developed regions, and the batch we’re seeing here is probably those left over from other parts of the world.  Hence the “low” price so that Acer can get rid of these things quickly, and move on to the next big thing.

  1. slightly off topic

when would these manufacturers offer Touch Screen 10 – 11 inches netbook with all the usual specs in Malaysia

using the keypad is difficult at airport and the mouse is even more of a hassle
touch screen monitors would be super convenient and fast

by the way i am going to Guilin next month
    - can i get any touch screen monitors netbook there?

@readycompanies, yes, there are touchscreen netbooks/notebooks, but they’re not very popular as they play in a niche market. The whole tablet/touchscreen scene never really took off due to various reasons. The touchscreen netbooks on the market now are the Gigabyte T1028M (10″), the M912V (9″) and the Asus T91 (9″). Most suffer from bad battery life. I think both Gigabyte models are available in Malaysia now, and the Asus *should* be coming.

I don’t know anything about getting any IT products in Guilin though. The best bet would be to go to Shenzen. I hear it’s an IT geek’s heaven there. I wished I had enough money to go…

I certainly hope the late arrival of the 751 does not portent a similarly late arrival of the 1810T. I’ve been putting off my purchase for months now waiting for decent 11.6″ offerings, with the main shortlist now including the 1810T, S12 ION and 510.

@Alex, let’s hope so. With Samsung now back in the netbook/notebook market, let’s hope that we have more choices going forward. I just saw the Samsung N110 on sale just now – the design is quite plain, and nothing to really differentiate it from the crowd. Plus, its price tag of RM 1,699 doesn’t really sit too well with me. But maybe it’s priced at a premium for a reason, until and unless I have a review unit, I wouldn’t know!

The S12 with ION? Don’t even know when it is coming. N510? Let’s hope it makes it here, I have every confidence it will, although whether at a price that is “affordable” is another question entirely.

@toniXe, glad you got it working finally and enjoying it to the full extent and getting your money’s worth! So, everything is fine now? Did they change any hardware at all?

I’m quite sure the CULV platform will be a different animal to the Atom, which I am slowly getting frustrated with!

Dad, do you know of any reviews that compares the performance of a culv device vs atom? Wondering what the performance differential is like.

@toniXe, hey, that’s good to know. 6 hours runtime on a 14″ screen device is indeed commendable. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it to the fullest now!
