The laptopmag website recently published their review of the Acer Aspire One 11.6″ netbook, the 751H. The short of it is that while they loved the long battery life, the perfomance of the Intel Atom Z series processor, specifically the Z520 running at 1.33Ghz was just too painful to put up with. As they like to say, I guess you can’t win them all. The 751 has got a sufficiently large screen, larger than the stock 10″ found on 99% of netbooks on the market today, and comes with a good battery operating time to boot, due in part to the lower power consumption Z series processor. But this comes at a cost – lower performance. If we were already complaining about the performance of the more powerful but energy sapping N series processor, any semi-intelligent dog person would be able to conclude, even without testing, that the Z series, except if it was running at 1.8Ghz or faster, would prove to be a test of patience during usage. And this is the second review to conclude this; I posted about an earlier one here.
Allow me to quote their verdict, in case you’re too lazy to click through to read!
If you’re craving a little more screen real estate than the average netbook, along with a high-res display, the $379 [editor's note: I think they meant to say US$ 399] Acer Aspire One AO751h combines several compelling features, such as seven hours of battery life and an exceptionally slim 1-inch thick shape. But if all you want is a netbook—and not necessarily an 11-inch one—there are several comparably priced (albeit, thicker) 10-inch models, such as the $399 Toshiba NB205 and the $389 ASUS 1005HA, which run faster and last even longer.
The 751 costs US$ 399 (RM 1,409) for the 3 cell battery and US$ 449 (RM 1,586) for the 6 cell battery in the US. If it arrives in Malaysia, and that’s a big if, as it’s long overdue, I fear it would sell above RM 1,999. Perhaps the poor performance are the reasons for:
- Acer not releasing the 751 in every market?
- Intel quietly withdrawing the Z series processor from the market?
- MSI is refusing to manufacture many more netbooks using the Z series processor?
- Gateway is using the AMD processor in its 11″ netbook offering?

So in short the Z-series sucks. Glad we got the D250 for my mom then.

@Haris, until today, I’m still wondering why Intel released it, and why seemingly smart manufacturers use it in their netbooks. It is really a lame processor, trust me. I know, because I’m using a Z520 now everyday, for at least 10 hours a day!

This is a shocking revelation , with the z series coming from a world class co like Intel. Its not possible that they do not know its limitations !
Maybe they thoz consumers are suckers or are they doing a quick dumping , conning Acer where it hurts most ?

@toni, no, not so shocking methinks. Even the major names get it wrong, which is rather shocking considering the number of smart people they have working for them…
