Thanks to “Toon899″ in the shoutbox, we now know that the latest Symbian version of Garmin Mobile XT (GMXT), version 5.00.30, released recently, now supports the Nokia 5800 running Symbian s60v5 natively, without the need for the VirtualKey software. Damn, looks like the traffic on this site will go down soon, haha…
Download it here, or click here for another mirror. You can, of course, download from the Garmin website, but I have kindly repacked it so that it only contains the necessary files for installation on the 5800. What you need to do (really simple, no need for a detailed tutorial!):
- extract all files and folders from the package onto the root of your memory card. That is, if your memory card is “E” drive, just drag and drop all folders and files in this package on to the E drive, not into any folder, but the “root” directory.
- there is no need to uninstall the current version of GMXT.
- install the latest version of GMXT by tapping on the “GarminMobileXT.sis” file in File Explorer on your phone.
So, all touch functions now work. I haven’t tested extensively, but I think landscape display of the malsingmaps map work as well. Drop a comment if you find any bugs! Sorry, I can’t snap a screenshot in landscape mode, stupid ScreenSnap software!

@Storm, no the MFM map is free to use and open. You “created” the gmapsupp.img? Using the Mapsource installer from the MFM website? Try downloading the one I have pre-generated on this site, and let me know the results. Is the phone displaying any error or other messages when launching GMXT?

@Nicody, you still need a license to use GMXT with a non-Garmin GPS receiver. This will unlock GMXT for use with any third party embedded GPS receiver, like the one found in the 5800.

@fendi07, this is usually caused by one not hard resetting their phone when they first get it. There are three possible solutions:
(1) change system date back to some time in June/September 2008
(2) hack your phone to be able to install expired and unsigned applications
(3) hard reset your phone using *#7370# which will wipe out all data and applications that you have on the phone memory, so back up first!
The choice is yours.

@Chip, good to know. Quick tip – you can’t use Mapsource maps on your device – Mapsource maps are meant to be used by the Mapsource program running on the PC only. You need maps in IMG format, what I call device-ready format. And I presume you’re looking for the US map? I’m afraid you either need to buy them, or Google will help you find what you’re looking for!
And of course since maps are payable products, you will need map unlock codes to use them
Again, Google is a tremendous resource with the right keywords!
[Reply]
Thanks for the help! One last question, do I need to find special maps for the mobile/ XT version or will any garmin maps work?
[Reply]
Da Alpha Dog Reply:
May 30th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
No, Garmin maps only come in two versions, Mapsource, and device ready formats. Most of them that you will find through Google will be in device ready format; Mapsource versions are rarer because the people who use them are much smaller in number.
[Reply]
Yup I got the maps on the device! I did some testing today and I found out that it doesn’t really work
The GPS after restarting the program gets a fix on the coordinates but there is only one bar of signal, even when I stand outside. I get 3-5 satellites and it is still one bar. Since it is saying this, I am not able to use the device because it keeps on saying Waiting for better GPS accuracy. Any ideas on this problem? Thanks!

@Chip, maybe it was a bad day for GPS satellite signal reception, or the area was not suitable. You could try again at a different location. Bear in mind that if you’re in the city with tall buildings around you, this will affect reception quality somewhat.
Also, A-GPS, which uses cellular signals to triangulate your position faster, is quite useful, but this incurs some data costs. Do you have a data facility on your plan?
[Reply]
Chip Reply:
May 31st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Nope, I do not have a data plan. However, I have an Iphone 3G with the data plan (the 5800 is my brothers) and I had it right next to me. Although i was in a city with high rise buildings for a while, my Iphone got a GPS signal under 5 seconds.
I’ll try once more, but do you think maybe there is some problem with the install or a bug?
Also, why did the older version not work for me? Any ideas about that? With the .3 and .4 versions, the button was on the left instead of the right and I could not click it.

Da Alpha Dog Reply:

@Chip, maybe you can swap SIM cards to test further? Otherwise it could be the GPS hardware in the 5800 which could be faulty (unlikely though). Use version 5.00.50, so far, it’s the latest and to me, the most stable. Uninstall everything after backing up your unlock file and map files, then delete the “garmin” folder, and restart the phone. Then reinstall, move the software unlock and map files back into the “garmin” folder, and start GMXT to test again. Earlier versions of GMXT did not support touch. BTW, where did you get the installer for GMXT from?

@Oney, try it with the free malfreemaps map, you may not have unlocked the malsingmaps map properly. Search this site, I post updates for malfreemaps every week. And do you have a satellite lock when you tried to see your location on the map? If you don’t have a lock, obviously the software cannot display where you are since it has no clue!
Stand outside for some minutes to get a lock the first time you use the device. Unless you are also using A-GPS, locking may take some time depending on where you are.
[Reply]
I had a breakthrough! Finally. The problem was with the A-GPS. Since I don’t have the data plan, the cell phone kept on trying to use the cell towers before the actual GPS. To fix this problem, I went into the settings under the Position application and changed the Network Ready and Assisted GPS to disabled. After I went back to garmin, it started working perfectly! Thanks for the files and the advice on this site!

@Chip, glad you solved your own problem. It’s strange that it was the A-GPS setting that was causing the problem – normally, the program will search for internal GPS receiver first before trying A-GPS. Very strange indeed.
On many phones, if I am not mistaken, A-GPS is enabled by default, system wide.

@firstin, no you don’t need a prior version installed, although you still need a software unlock key, and Google is your absolute bestest friend for this, if you’re into that sort of thing. I’m not encouraging it, but I don’t judge people.
The “root” folder is the topmost folder on your phone. It is a term commonly used in IT. Basically this -> c:\ is the “root” of your C drive. So, “f:\” will be the root of your F drive. So what you need to do is to drag the folders and files in the archive to the drive letter that represents your microSD card – drag all of them to the topmost folder and not into any other folder! I hope you understand what I’m saying!

@atmx1990, I’m not sure if your 5800 has an O2 firmware in it which will prevent the installation of some programs; I know that in the US, with carrier firmwares, some software are blocked. Download version 5.00.50 from this site and try to install it, if it’s successful, then you can use it. You would need a software unlock code to use GMXT with non-Garmin GPS receivers – this is the “paid” part you were referring to. Malaysia and Singapore maps are free. I believe you have to pay for other Southeast Asian countries.

My phone isn’t locked so I guess I will be able to install it. Thanks a lot! Basically, I would still need to pay $99.99 for the license? Is the license a one time charge, or are there anymore charges? I don’t mind paying one time charges as Nokia charges so much for a month of usage. I could buy a TomTom after a 3-4 months of usage.

@atmx1990, your phone may not be locked, but the firmware inside may not let you install certain applications (Orange in the UK are real b*stards when it comes to locking down the firmware to control what you can, and can’t install!). The fastest and easiest way to tell is to install using one of the installers found on this site, and see if it starts.
Yes, US$ 99.99 is the one time price you have to pay to activate the software which will include voice navigation. No recurring charges except for paying for maps, which are also a one time payment. I believe you can buy the software at a cheaper price online.

@AL@5800, yes, there are quite a lot of GPS software now, not only Garmin. Garmin is the most popular because Garmin maps are the most frequently updated; malfreemaps update them once a week, compared to other systems which update a couple of time per year.
Route66 I believe runs on Symbian. So does Sygic. As well as an older version of TomTom. I can’t comment on map quality – one thing’s for sure – they are not going to be as updated as Garmin’s maps. All the software I mentioned are “paid” software
