Thanks to “Toon899″ in the shoutbox, we now know that the latest Symbian version of Garmin Mobile XT (GMXT), version 5.00.30, released recently, now supports the Nokia 5800 running Symbian s60v5 natively, without the need for the VirtualKey software. Damn, looks like the traffic on this site will go down soon, haha…
Download it here, or click here for another mirror. You can, of course, download from the Garmin website, but I have kindly repacked it so that it only contains the necessary files for installation on the 5800. What you need to do (really simple, no need for a detailed tutorial!):
- extract all files and folders from the package onto the root of your memory card. That is, if your memory card is “E” drive, just drag and drop all folders and files in this package on to the E drive, not into any folder, but the “root” directory.
- there is no need to uninstall the current version of GMXT.
- install the latest version of GMXT by tapping on the “GarminMobileXT.sis” file in File Explorer on your phone.
So, all touch functions now work. I haven’t tested extensively, but I think landscape display of the malsingmaps map work as well. Drop a comment if you find any bugs! Sorry, I can’t snap a screenshot in landscape mode, stupid ScreenSnap software!

@asim, I’m about to give up as well, and ask you to contact Garmin support
Here are a few last things you can try:
(1) from my site, download version 5.00.40 from one of the other download links on that post – I believe there are 3 mirrors.
(2) delete “garmin” folder on memory card again.
(3) delete “GarminMobileXT.sis” from root of memory card.
(4) drag all files and folders in RAR archive you downloaded to your memory card root.
(5) on your 5800, using File Manager, tap on the file named “GarminMobileXT.sis” on the memory card root directory to install GMXT.
(6) set up as per the tutorials on this site.
If this still fails even after you hard resetted the phone before GMXT installation,
it’s time to contact Garmin support!

@terry, Garmin GPS navigation software is a paid product – you need to purchase it from Garmin for use with non-Garmin Bluetooth devices, such as the built-in GPS receiver on the 5800 or other Symbian phones. Once that is done, then usage of GPS is free. GPS signals come from US military satellites. If you use Assisted GPS (A-GPS) which uses the data from the cellular towers (ie. handphone signals) then you need to pay data charges to either Maxis, Celcom, DiGi or U Mobile depending on whom you use
After you install GMXT, you need to supply an unlock code for use with non-Garmin BT devices. Then select the phone’s built-in/attached GPS as the GPS device to use. Then put in the Malaysia map, and off you go!

@WjLye, yes, you have to pay for the software. It costs around US$ 100 if I am not mistaken. We are not discussing anything illegal here. We have no keygens nor do we post any serials. We help each other with problems. Do you need help too?

To install Garmin XTis also free.. You can download the trial version.. (correct me if i’m wrong)..
To use Garmin XT is free.. Unless you want to additional services that connect directly to the Garmin Server..
To use Garmin XT with non-garmin gps devices is subjective.. You need to get the unlock code for your device.. and here we are helping each other out..
..
To install new maps, free and not free depending on who releases them..
..
Am I right here DAD? hehehe

@HellTune, heheh, I hear lots of ahem ahem cough coughs in that comment!
All I want to say is that in the world of the internet, many, if not all things can be free. What we do not do on this site is to post explicit links or talk about places or tools which can help you do this – Google’s the place for that! Like you said, we help each other without going overboard. We’re not here to judge people who opt for the “free” route. And we hope other people don’t judge us in return because as I’ve mentioned before, there are no tools mentioned nor links mentioned here which leads directly to piracy. Basically, anything you read here can be Googled

@nelson, using this map -> http://mytechnews.info/b/2009/03/official-garmin-map-for-malaysia-singapore-and-brunei-dated-march-2009.html all I did was:
- on main screen, tap “Where to?”
- “Addresses” – “Malaysia” – “Search all cities” – “industri usj 1/12″ – tap the only result that appears – enter house number as 35 – “Next” – “Map” to view the address on the map (see screen capture below).
Is that the right address?
I haven’t tested on the malfreemaps or malsingmaps maps yet, but it should work the same way!
Dear DAD,
Let me help Nelson a bit, Nelson, you can press “WHERE TO?” then you press ” POINT OF INTEREST” then you press “SPELL NAME” then you key in your location there OR still cant find the location you are looking for then you have scroll along the map but carefull it will FREEZE anytime..

Using the Where To, either i put in the building name or the road name.. usually, i got the answer where i should go.. As long as I can get to that road or building, definitely i can find the correct location.. You can try this Nelson..

@mnar, why are you using Mapsource for the “transfer”? I presume this is one of the Malaysia maps, there are plenty of device ready maps on this site, which you can just drag and drop into the “garmin” folder on the phone’s memory card to use! Alternatively, take out the memory card, put it into a card reader, and connect card reader to PC. In Mapsource, select the drive letter assigned to the memory card, and “send to the device” that way.

@mnar, if I am correct in assuming this is the Garmin version, version 3, then it is rubbish. Try one of the malfreemaps maps on this site – they’re much better. And it is already in IMG format ready to be copied over to your memory card anytime without going through the rubbish (for most users anyway) that is called Mapsource

@Tubers, are you using the Garmin City Navigator map or the navigasi.net map? Try switching to the other – for example, if you’re using navigasi’s map, test the Garmin version and vice versa.
Otherwise, you may want to uninstall GMXT, delete the “garmin” folder from the memory card, reinstall GMXT and test again. Remember to back up your sw.unl and any map unlock files before you delete the “garmin” folder!

@DAD
I m using navigasi.net’s and already tried switching to Garmin City Navigator’s. and its the same…
This is how to crash Garmin:
1. Wait till GPS locked
2. click where to, and choose any point of interest to start a routing, you will be directed to navigation map view
3. on the green heading (“Continue to ….”), click and a list of messages are available, put to landscape, and click any of the messages and garmin will crash. or click on turn preview will habe the same result.
I already tried all versions available, including the hard way install and update it to 5.0.0.40, the problem exist in all version. BUT installing the hard way made the satelite lock faster.
Hard Way = install 5.0.0.0 version, update, etc etc

After installing the file, I tried turned on GMXT. It went on to saying to ‘Searching for GPS devices…’ & then ‘No GPS devices found. Try again ? ‘ If I choose ‘yes’ I goes on doing the same loop again. If I choose ‘No’, the whole GMXT application freezes up & need to quit the software by pressing the red button on the phone !

@Tony, glad you got it working. To get internal GPS working, when it asks you whether to continue searching, say “Yes” since “No” will crash the application. Then quickly access “Tools – Settings – System – Remote GPS – Built-in/Attached GPS”, and restart GMXT.
Then, go stand outside under a clear open sky and wait for a satellite lock – again, patience is a virtue.

@Tony, no problem glad it worked out for you.
As for searching, I’m not a hardcore user but one thing I’ve learnt about using the Malaysian map is that don’t enter your search in too detailed a fashion. Just do a more general search, and zoom in from there. I hope you know what I mean. Also, no need to input “jalan”, or “lorong”, etc.
As for entering lat and long, sorry, I’ve no idea on the exact syntax. Maybe reading the manual/help file will enlighten you?

@ajojo, try these:
(1) turn off the phone, wait for a while, then turn it on again
(2) change system date to 6 months before, for example some time in September 2008
If these steps fail to resolve the problem, a hard reset may be in order. Beware – you will lose all data and applications installed on the phone if you do this, so do a backup first. Your other alternative is to hack your phone so that it will install anything without checks.
