There are signs that an update to the Android operating system (that currently only powers the T-Mobile G1 handset) is imminent, judging by the comments on a hitherto private development branch of the Android project. Previously, this group has privately pursued enhancements to the Android OS, rather independently of the “main”/official Android project team, but now their work is about to be folded into a new official firmware version.
Unfortunately for G1 owners, this update is not G1 specific, rather, it is meant more for future devices (huh? I didn’t know there were “future” devices on the near-term horizon apart from the Kogan handset), but of course there is nothing to stop T-Mobile from rolling out this firmware enhancement to current G1 owners to ah…increase customer satisfaction(?) In any case, I hope this versio is made available soon, I’m anxious to have it, because, amongst its many changes, it includes:
- video recording (yay!)
- A2DP/AVRCP support (double yay!)
- faster browser (OK…not that exciting…)
Dang…still no fix for the poor battery life. But at least this shows that Google is not standing still with Android although there is currently only one device out that supports it. Good news indeed

[...] Anywho, here’s the video of the HKC Pearl in action. About the only exciting thing here is that they claim it’s able to run Android and Windows Mobile (”WinMo”), though whether side-by-side or mutually exclusive of each other (ie. if you install Android, you can’t run WinMo, and vice versa). The video only shows the Android portion in action. Nothing exciting if you’ve seen the T-Mobile G1 in action, this one doesn’t introduce new features of the firmware talked about here. [...]
